COMPSCI 705 & SOFTENG 702 Advanced Topics in Human Computer Interaction 2019

1. Validity and user study design. How do questions about construct validity influence the design of a user study? Give brief examples to explain the concept of construct validity by   example.

2. Metrics and research questions. A colleague Pat wants to understand how to aggregate time measurements in user interface studies. Give Pat general advice on when to use           arithmetic mean and when to use the median to compare different time measurements.        Explain with different example research questions.

3. Emotion measures and epistemology. What measures of user emotion would be used for Postpositivist, Constructivist and Pragmatic research?  For each epistemological position,      briefly explain the position and include examples of associated research questions, methods, and data. Make arguments for two or more emotion measure(s) for each position.

4. Informed consent. Describe the meaning of informed consent and describe standards of informed consent in HCI research. Facebook was involved in two HCI case examples where informed consent was not sought: the emotional contagion experiment and the Cambridge    Analytica scandal. Choose one case example and describe how informed consent was not     supported.

i.          Gaze tracking for interaction. What are challenges in using gaze tracking for interaction? Give a brief discussion of two of them.

ii.        Humanistic HCI. What is the meaning of Humanistic HCI? Give an example of a Humanistic HCI research project and justify the research question, method, data,   findings and contribution.
