How- ever, if we consider the uncertain events, such as heart attack or bus accidents, that can reduce H* , then people will have a stronger incentive to avoid these risks. Put in another way, when the depreciation rate 7 is high, then people will be less concerned about these risks because their health will quickly deteriorate anyway.

Question 2:  Textbook Chapter 3, Q16.

Answer:

a. The utility from each meal is as follows:

Steak and eggs: 3 · 7 一 2 = 19

Kale salad with broccoli: 3 · (一2) + 5 = 一1

Entire box of cookies: 3 · 10 一 20 = 10

Thus the consumer will choose steak and eggs.

b.  With the miracle pill, the utility from cookies become 3 · 10 一 10 = 20.

So the consumer will choose cookies.

c.  With the miracle pill the consumers is better o§ in term of utility.  But his health level (一10) is worse in comparison with choosing steak and eggs ( 一2) or salad (5).

d.  From the lifetime perspective, health is a capital that generates returns in future periods. Thus the individual will have a stronger incentive to maintain higher health, and thus she may opt for salad.

Answer:
