QUIZ 2 A02 KEY

Read each question and see if there is an error in grammar or writing. If there is an error, fix it by writing the correction in the answer box. If there is no error, write the letter C in   the answer box. If a question has an error, it will not contain more than one type of major

error. If you try to correct a sentence that is already correct, the question will be marked

wrong. You must correct the error; you can’t just delete words to make it go away.

1.   In Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy ofMacbeth,” Kathryn Hunter plays all three witches. Hunter also plays the old man outside Macbeth’s castle. [This is a movie, so the    title is in italics. If it were a play it would also be in italics. See OWL and          Lecture 2, min. 14, on italicizing books and movies.]

2.   Josephine worked in a hospital last summer, which may be her career choice.

[Ambiguous pronoun use. Medicine may be her career choice, or pediatrics, or public health officer, etc. Correct punctuation needed after the word         summer. See OWL and Lecture 2, min. 28]

3.   For some people, five dollars are a lot ofmoney [is--see OWL on subject-verb

agreement]

4.   Modern Times is the greatest movie ever made about the capitalist system.

[Movies in italics, see OWL and lecture 2.]

5.   She tested her survival skills in the Sahara, she was not allowed to carry matches     or a phone. She was taught how to start a fire with a piece of flint. [Fix the comma splice after Sahara, full stop or semicolon needed between the two independent clauses. See Owl and Lecture 2.]

6.   Only one person can solve the problem—Sherlock Holmes. [C The long dash is

correct. See OWL and Lecture 2]

7.   Mr. Chin raises mosquito larvae in a barrel ofrainwater and he feeds the creatures to the fish in his pond. [Insert comma after rainwater, before the coordinating conjunction. Or you could write … of rainwater and feeds …See OWL and    Lecture 2]

8.   I was in a bookstore in Los Angeles I found books by Ailing Zhang and San Mao.

I found the work ofYūko Tsushima and the early novels ofCormac McCarthy.

9.   A live duck is in the jar. Can you remove the duck from the jar? You can’t break

the jar and you can’t hurt the duck. [Comma before the coordinating conjunction and, see OWL and Lecture 2.]

10. Why are dollars used in Russia instead ofrubles. [needs question mark—it’s plain that the sentence is a question]

11. Betty waved at Veronica, laughing joyously. [ambiguous; possible answer Betty,

laughing joyously, waved at Veronica—see OWL Purdue and Lecture 2,

avoiding ambiguity]

12. The word “evil” is used nine times in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. [evil--see OWL Purdue and Lecture 2, min. 14]

13. When I lived in Oaxaca, I slept in the forest. One night, by the light of a fire, I read

Bury Me Standing: The Gypsies and Their Journey, a book by Isabel Fonseca.

[books in italics, see OWL and Lecture 2]

14. Plato described a prisoner who lived almost his entire life in a cave. The prisoner   was chained to a wall. He did not see actual things he saw only their shadows on    the wall. [punctuation after the word things, the word only is correct—see test instructions and see OWL and Lecture 2]

15. I realized that I was driving the wrong way down a one-way street in Piedras Negras, so I stopped at a PEMEX station and asked for directions. [C]

16. I drove the tractor to the barn. I unloaded the tobacco leaves from the wagon. The   leaves were a green colour, but they would turn brown when they dried in the barn.

[Comma after Island, see OWL, commas used with non-essential information. You could also use a long dash, see Lecture 2. One of several islands near         Tierra del Fuego also acts as an appositive phrase, describing Greedy Island,

and would be set off with commas. You could also make a full stop after Island with …Island. It is one of several islands near Tierra del Fuego.]
