SCIF1004 – Summer Term 2026
Assessment Information
Below is a description of how each of your assessments are assessed, the aim of this document is to mitigate confusion over the assessment process and be as transparent with you as I can be as each year numerous requests for remarks are still submitted (despite me explaining the process in e-mail to students) each with the same result.
Use of AI
In this course the use of AI is not permitted beyond using it to suggest a topic or movie that you might use, as I see that as the same as asking me (or a friend/relative) about the same thing. It is recommended that you keep notes and drafts of your work as having these things makes any work that is flagged as AI created very easy to dismiss as false positives.
Due Dates
Please note that all due dates are set to 5 minutes to midnight of the day stated i.e. if the due date is a Friday you have until 2355 that evening to submit your assignments. You may submit early, but not late (vide infra)
Late Submissions – Penalties
Unless otherwise granted (via special consideration) late submission of assignments 2 & 3 will carry a 5-mark deduction for each day that it is overdue up to 5 days where the penalty will be 100-marks (this is UNSW policy). Note that assignments are out of 100-marks, therefore if an assignment was 2 days late and would normally score 65 it would instead score 55. Late submissions/attempts of the quizzes (assignment 1) are not permitted and as such carry a 100% late penalty.
Assignment 1 - Quizzes
The quizzes are computer marked, occasionally you may find you have been marked incorrectly (on written response items), this is mostly due to spelling errors (this is still incorrect). On very rare occasions it could be that you have an alternate answer that has not been anticipated (that is also valid), if you feel that this is the case the contact the course coordinator.
Assignment 2 – Video Presentation
Rubrics, everything is assessed with the rubric provided. In order to be awarded a level on a rubric you must complete all of the criteria in that area of the grid and have satisfied all previous criteria, i.e. each area builds on from the last, you cannot be awarded a higher level if you have not fully satisfied all of the criteria in every area that precedes it.
The assessor will select levels on the rubric and this will then calculate your mark (note that your actual mark will be reported in a separate column in the gradebook – this is so I can impose late penalties)
Any request for a remark must go through the standard university procedure, refer to “UNSW review of results” webpage (https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/results) .
Assignment 3 – Free-Form Piece
This assignment is assessed using another rubric, the marking procedure is the same as it is for assignment 2 (vide supra). My general advice is to really look through the rubric and think critically about your assignment before submitting, many students submit work that is off topic or does not contain all of the information needed, this can severely impact the final grade.
The assessor will select levels on the rubric and this will then calculate your mark (note that your actual mark will be reported in a separate column in the gradebook – this is so I can impose late penalties)
