Final Assignmen: Conservation Proposal

Grading: 40%

Assignment Instructions

For this assignment, you will:

1. Select a historic building from the list provided on Moodle.

2. Conduct a condition survey of the building’s exterior envelope.

3. Assess the surrounding urban context and accessibility to the site.

4. Identify risks to the building (e.g., environmental, urban development, neglect).

5. State your conservation philosophy and explain how it informs your approach for

this building. Your conservation proposal must clearly state your overall conservation philosophy.

6. Establish conservation policies to guide the future care and development of the heritage asset. Policies should reference the most relevant charters and guidelines to support your recommended course of action, and Hong Kong regulations.

7. SDG Mapping. Determine how your conservation proposal will address the SDGs.

This assignment consists of three objectives:

Objective One: Retention of Significance

•     Identify 5 key Character Defining Elements (CDEs) of the building.

•     For each of the five Character Defining Elements (CDEs), develop a specific conservation policy (treatment/action) that ensures its continued significance.

•     Clearly explain the rationale for each policy, linking your approach to the building’s heritage values and relevant policies/regulations.

•     Reference appropriate international charters, standards, and guidelines (e.g., Venice Charter, Burra Charter, Hong Kong standards).

•     Provide a concise guideline for implementing each policy.

Objective Two: Remedial Recommendations for Building Defects

•     Identify 4 building defects from your condition survey.

•     Present each defect with supporting notes, photographs (including markup, date, and time), and, where appropriate, sketches or drawings.

•     Develop remedial policies that address these defects without compromising the heritage significance of the building.

•     Clearly explain the rationale for each remedial action, linking to heritage values and relevant regulations.

•     Provide a practical guideline for implementing each remedial action in line with discussed charters and standards.

Objective Three: Addressing the Sustainable Development Goals

•     Identify the most relevant SDGs that will be addressed through this conservation proposal and provide a well-structured justification of how each SDG is addressed.

Deliverables

Your submission should include:

•     Please include your name, student ID, course name, and course number on the cover page. Each page must display your name, student ID, and page number in the footer.

•     The name and location of the building, with photographs that you have taken, showing its context and surrounding environment. Photographs from other sources will not be accepted.

•     Information about the surrounding environment, including nearby buildings, landscape features, proximity to natural water sources, slope of land, neighbouring industries, and  any activities that might affect the building. Include photos or sketches for key areas. All photos and sketches must be your own work.

•     A brief description of the building, its current use, and a statement of significance that clearly articulates how the character defining elements contribute to this significance, supported by archival research and appropriate sources.

Photographs and drawings of your selected CDEs and identified defects, with proper markup (including date and time of recording defects).

•     All references to external documents must be correctly cited using MLA or Harvard citation style.
