Purpose: The purpose of the major essay is to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of social theories and their concepts,and to critically apply them to a particular social behaviour or issue.The essay will be used to assess your ability to develop a critical argument based on sound logic,using social theories, concepts and associated evidence.
Instructions: This is an 1800(+/-10%)word written essay,and it is the major assessment of this unit. The essay will address ONE of several questions(listed below).These questions relate to topics covered in weeks 5-10.You can choose the essay question which relates to the topic that interests you most.While the style of the paper is the student's choice,all papers must be grounded in content from this Unit and underscored by quality academic sources.Evidence of critical thinking is expected.Where relevant,positions can be taken; however,this should take the form of informed argumentation supported by sound logic and,where possible,relevant existing theory and empirical evidence.
Word Count: 1800 words(+/-10%)(this includes in-text references,but NOT the Reference list)

1.How can our knowledge of the psychological dimensions of self-esteem and identity help us to make sense of intergroup dynamics and conflict?
2.What makes an effective leader?Choose a theory of leadership and use this to explore the leadership style of a leader from the last 15 years.
3.Is there a relationship between violent media(e.g.video games,films)and violent,aggressive behaviour?
4.Why do some people comply with public health measures(such as wearing a mask)during a pandemic,while others do not?Draw on psychological and/or sociological literature to support your answer.
5.Choose 1-2 online behaviours and analyse these through the key concepts/theory from the Unit.In your analysis,critically discuss their origins,manifestation,and impact(eg psychologically,culturally).

·Your essay must be grounded in content from the course and supported by quality academic sources.
·Make use of the essential readings and suggested readings.
·You may want to use google scholar and the library database to identify and acquire other quality academic sources.
·Provide a clear introduction which:introduces the topic;describes what your essay will be addressing;and provides a brief overview of the structure of the essay(e.g.state what theory/concepts you be using).
·It is important to highlight and describe the relevance and scale of the societal issue you are addressing.Articulate why is it important to address the issue from a psychological and/or sociological perspective.

Late submission and penalties:
Please be aware that the following penalties apply if you submit your assessment task after the due date and time without an approved extension or special consideration:
You will receive a penalty of 5 per cent for late submission,and a further 5per cent penalty will be applied for each additional day (24-hour period),or part thereof,that the assessment task is overdue.Assessment tasks submitted more than seven days late will not be accepted and will receive a zero mark.
