Create an app for an imaginary service or organisation

In a group of three students, design a mobile application (or app) for an imaginary service or organisation which demonstrates the practical application of concepts from the course. You will use a mobile app development platform (e.g. Buildfire) as the medium for making and presenting your design ideas. Your group will be given Lab sessions to design this mobile application. Please note, that there will be limitations on the kinds of functionality and content you can create in the free app building platform used.

The service you design can be one that takes an existing category or type of mobile application, and imagines how it could be transformed by critically applying concepts from the subject. Alternatively, you may like to try and create a new, experimental, or imaginative example of a mobile application, which uses concepts from the course to critically reflect on the culture or economy of apps.

Your app can range from commercial, to community, to activist purposes, but it must engage with an aspect of internet communication discussed in the subject. Feel free to be creative, and to draw upon any of the ideas or lab activities from the course. This is your chance to engage with and/or critique the concepts or ideologies found throughout the course material, the political economy of production, or any other approach to creating and sharing and consuming content in our digitally mediated society.

In the final lab session each group will be required to explain their app and present their organisation/idea/service to the class in a 10 minute presentation.

On the due date, you will be expected to submit a walkthrough of your application. This can be in the form of a PDF, presentation or report that links to your online design.

This also needs to be accompanied by a group written plan, not exceeding 1000 words, which includes:

A description of the idea/service/organisation and its goals;

A summary of the identity, design, and branding elements;

A description of your target audience/users, and use model;

An assessment of how this app relates to, and differs from, existing apps;

An analysis of how the app intersects with relevant issues from the subject;

And a reflection on the challenges and opportunities in designing the app.

Each group member will also be required to individually submit a group assessment sheet reflecting on how well your group worked to keep one another accountable and ensure the tutor remains informed of your groups conduct and distribution of work.

Your design project will be marked against the following criteria:

Professionalism: Ability to design a coherent app interface, and the communication of information.

Originality: How innovative or unique your proposal is.

Feasibility: How much you have thought through the potential feasibility of your proposal.

Related to Subject Material: Being aware of how the goals of your idea engage or extend specific concepts from the subject.
