2025-26  Semester 1

Assessment 1 Student Guide 一 Extended Outline (5%)

OVERVIEW

In this assessment, you will create an extended outline for your compare-and-contrast essay (Assessment 2). Your outline should include:

•     A thesis statement with an essay overview

•     Topic sentence for each body paragraph.

•     Supporting details for each idea.

•     Optional: Multimodal elements (e.g. images, graphs) that you plan to use in Assessment 2

Submission deadline: 24 hours before the start of your Week 6 class via LEARN@PolyU

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Choose a Broad Area

Select one of the following broad areas to explore in your essay.

•     Sports and Games

     Hobbies and Leisure Activities

•     Learning Styles and Study Habits

•     Travel and Exploration

Step 2: Narrow Down Your Topic

Refine your broad area into a focused topic and choose two specific subjects to compare and contrast. Remember you should:

•   Choose subjects you are genuinely curious about or familiar with.

•   Avoid topics that are too general or based on common knowledge

•    Focus on analysis—not just description. Ask yourself: Why do these similarities or differences matter?

Step 3: Research & Brainstorm

•     Use PolyU Library resources (catalogues and databases under Find Resources) to gather information.

•     Use GenAI tools to brainstorm or generate ideas (optional).

Step 4: Write Your Outline

•     Download and use the A1 Extended Outline Template on LEARN@PolyU – see sample on p.3.

•     Write in your own words—do not copy content.

•     Paraphrase sources properly and cite where needed.

Step 5: Add & Reference Multimodal Elements

•     Include at least 4 multimodal elements (e.g., photos, charts, screenshots, drawings). These can be self-created or sourced online.

•     Reference all multimodal elements - see sample on pp. 4–5.

Step 6: Submit Your Outline

•     Follow the submission guidelines below.

•     Submit your completed outline before the deadline.

Step 7: Attend Peer Review

•     Join the Week 6 peer review/consultation session to receive feedback and improve your work.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

•     Upload your outline as a Microsoft Word (docx) file with 1.5 line spacing, using either Arial 11-point or Times New Roman 12-point font.

•     Make sure you upload the correct file and download the Turnitin digital receipt (or save a screenshot) as proof of successful submission in case of technical issues.

•     Contact your teacher within 24 hours after the deadline for late submission with an explanation supported by valid evidence and/or documentations (e.g., an original  doctor’s note).

Grading

•     5% if you (1) submit on time and (2) attend the peer review/consultation session in Week 6.

•     0% if you complete either (1) or (2) only.

•     0% if you submit late without a justified reason supported by valid evidence and/or documentations.
