The focus of this case study is on language and race.  In order to complete this assignment, answer the following questions, followed by the research prompts.  Clearly label or refer to the questions and research prompts in your write-up.  Please do not use examples that we discussed in class.

Questions:

(1)  How are racial and linguistic stereotypes linked to one another?

(2)  How can language alternately reproduce and contest racial hierarchies?

Research:

(1)  Referring to question (2) above, research and find a specific example of language contesting racial hierarchies.  Your example can be in the United States or outside the country and should be something that occurred or has been occurring in the last 10 years.

(2)  Briefly describe the background of the situation, including any relevant policies, groups, cultural points, etc.

(3)  Explain how language is reproducing or contesting racial hierarchies in the example you found.

(4)  In the final part of the paper, give any personal thoughts about the example.  You may comment on the pros and cons of the situation, possible solutions (or alternate solutions), etc.  I want you to critically think about this issue and your chosen example specifically.

Structure

●   The paper should be roughly 1 ½ to 2 pages long.

●   This paper should be double-spaced, with 12-point font, and with 1-inch margins

●   Please do not submit a title page or use a significant portion of space at the beginning of the assignment for name, course number, etc.  Please just use a similar format to the one on this assignment

●   There is not a requirement on the number of sources you cite, but any information you get from outside sources  must be cited (in-text) and the source included on the final reference page
