ESL 112 Reflective Assignment
(5% of final grade)
Purpose
Throughout the course you will pause to reflect on some past event, your development as a writer, and/or the writing project (e.g. discovery of connections among people, events, or emotions not previously revealed). Through reflections you will come to new understanding of the “why” behind events or decisions that might be applied to guide future projects.
Assignment Description
You will write a short reflective essay that responds to the reflection question(s) below.
Reflection 1: In this class, we do a lot pair/small group work. What do you believe is the purpose behind small group work in this class? Have you found pair/small group work to be useful? Why or why not? What are three possible benefits to small group work in this class? How is this similar or different from the way classes are run in your home country? Which do you prefer? Why?
Reflection 2: In terms of academic writing, what are the three most valuable things you learned in this class? Why are they so important? How will they change your future writing? Do you feel that you have grown to be a better writer since beginning this class? Why or why not? What are three things about your academic writing you feel you still need to improve? Why?
Source Requirements
Although students are not required to use outside sources for this assignment, successful responses will include details and examples from the writer’s experiences.
Formatting Requirements
Essays should be 2-3 pages (about 600-800 words) in length and formatted to include Times New Roman, size 12 font. Paragraphs should be indented and double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. The first page of your assignment should include your name, section, date, assignment name, and draft number (if appropriate). Final drafts should include your UIN (9-digit number).
Academic Integrity Reminder
Students must submit their own, original work to receive credit. Since reflecting on the writer’s own experiences and insights is the goal of this assignment, use of Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, is prohibited. Students may still use a grammar checker software, such as Grammarly, for proofreading.
If a student is suspected of violating academic integrity, even unintentional, the instructor will initiate procedures outlined in the Student Code on Academic Integrity and Course Policies; see College of LAS’s academic integrity infraction process for more information.
Submission Requirements
Students should submit on the course website by 11:59pm on the due date listed on the course calendar.
Students will be asked to submit one or more drafts of this assignment to plagiarism detection software.
Grading Criteria
All above-mentioned Steps will contribute to the Reflective Assignment category of your final grade in this course as indicated in the First Day Handout. For all drafts, you will be held accountable for the quality of your work. For the first/second draft, your work will be scored on general adherence to the assignment requirements as detailed in the assignment description and rubric criteria; points will be deducted for underdeveloped or missing components. The final draft will be scored using the rubric below.
