Studio 4: Folio 1 Assignment - Peers and Contexts

Studio 4 is much more than just 'doing the work' it is about reflective practice and research to gain peer recognition in the wider world.

Although a work in progress, Folio 01 should be heading towards dissemination of knowledge in scholarly, arts, professional industry and/or academic contexts. This means that whatever form your Folio 01 takes, it should clearly demonstrate and articulate the value and significance to your chosen field of practice.

In developing Folio 01 you will need to identify and pursue established sites of peer recognition, such as conferences, screenings, events, festivals or gallery spaces that your research project is engaging with. We have provided some great examples and opportunities.

We are looking for a very resolved understanding of the necessary requirements for a scholarly publishable work. As such, the minimum submission is a draft of the Extended Abstract that is formatted as per the exemplars shared (Abstract, Introduction, Background, Methodology, Project/Findings, Discussion, Conclusion-land References) and a Dissemination Document which outlines your planned, in-progress and/or confirmed dissemination activities and work.

Your Folio 01 submission will vary depending on the Studio 4 dissemination outcomes you are developing but it is expected you will have developed a strong base that will be completed to a high quality by the end of the semester. Your Extended Abstract should have a resolved draft up to 3,000 words. A draft of 3,000 words will be submitted if you do not have a commissioned / public project you are working on. If you are developing a commissioned project in a public setting you will submit a resolved animatic or prototype of the work and comprehensive pre-production material at a minimum. Again - the submission will depend on your intended dissemination, please discuss this with us. Many of you will submit a combination of objects - if so, please allocate a percentage for each in discussion with your lecturers.

Unless you have a commission or invitation to exhibit in a public context (gallery, screening, workshop, event, conference, festival etc), Studio 4 is not about creating another new major project as you have done in previous studios. However if you have a compelling and significant inquiry that is motivating your practice you might advance on a previous project in a new way. Or you might undertake a new very tightly scoped creative practice project that investigates a compelling inquiry. This will need to be discussed with lecturers and agreed to. Making a project alone is not research - work undertaken in Studio 4 needs to be driven by a valuable inquiry that can make a contribution to the field. For a number of Studio 4 students it is about critically reflecting upon your previous work and disseminating it strategically in your field. For others, they may have a new commissioned work that is being developed for a public context. Please discuss these possibilities with your Studio 4 lecturers.

If you have started your dissemination activities, your in-progress submission might be:

Extended Abstract: 2,500 words: 70%

Public Workshop: 5%

Conference Short Paper: 25%

or it might be:

Extended Abstract: 1,400 words: 50%

Public Artist Talk: 1,000 words; 10%

Animation selected for public exhibition: 40%

or it might be:

Extended Abstract: 1,200 words: 40%

Commissioned game for festival: 50%

Small grant submission: 10%

These percentages are examples of how a submission might be scaled, they are not percentages in terms of marks or grades.

Everyone will have their own sites of dissemination outlined in their Dissemination Document. In Folio 01 these are likely to be planned or in-progress, however some students might have confirmed some dissemination.

For example, some sites of dissemination to be considered are:

- Exhibition

Screening

- Artist Talk

Conference Paper

Funding application

Journal Article

Workshop

- Grant proposal

Public commission

- Festival

- PhD Proposal

- Media

- Artist Residency

And so on.

Peer reviewed sites of dissemination are the key aim, where a selection process has occurred and your work has been acknowledged by experts in your field.

The expectation for Folio 01 is to demonstrate an initial rigorous and extensive engagement with the issues, problems, methods, audiences and needs of your field of practice.

As Folio 02 requires you to create a short video 'essay which conveys your Publishable Research Outcome, please generate and gather material for this over the semester.
