EEEE3123 Renewable Generation Technologies
Case Study Assignment
Scenario
Many parts of the world that have no grid require electricity for rural school. You are required to provide an outline design for a Renewable Energy (RE) based system to provide power to a school, which should be powered by an off-grid electricity supply.
The daily power requirements of the school are given inFigure 1, you can assume everyday requires the same power.

The project will be an individual piece of coursework. A design report will be submitted by 5 pm on Thursday 2nd May 2024.
Location
To determine the site of the school, take the first four letters from your name and convert them into numbers (A=1, B=2, C=3 etc). Then take the first pair and add them together, and the same with the second pair. These are your coordinates. Make it clear in your report which name is used.
Example (Nadia):
N+A and D+I becomes 18+5 and 8+13 or 23, 21. The location of the school will be in the square with latitude 23°- 24° (N) and longitude 21°-22° (E), near Kufra, Libya .

Location FAQ:
• If one of your names is less than 4 letters, take letters from you next name.
• The area of 1 degree in latitude and longitude is quite large, so there is some flexibility in your exact school location. Justify why you choose the specific spot.
• If your location is in the sea try using west longitude, south latitude or both. If this still does not work, find the nearest coastline or island to your original location.
• If your location is in a populated area or one likely to have a grid supply, ignore this connection and assume for whatever reason it must be powered off grid.
• If your location ends up somewhere weird (up a mountain, nowhere near civilisation),still use it. You do not need to justify the location.
Energy Supplies
Lookup the climate data for your site and give a high level overview of the renewable energy resources available. Use figures and tables to showcase the available sources. Include all renewables you have learnt about (even if there is little potential) to prove it is not an option. E.g include hydro in a desert by showing how little rainfall there is and so it would be ineffective, rather than just ignoring it.
Decide which renewable energy source or combination would be suitable for supplying electricity to the school. Clearly state the best source(s) to supply the electrical power with justification.
Also select a second source, in order to make a comparison between the two sources.
Use resources from meteorological and climate websites and atlases. Please reference your sources.
Energy conversion
The report should specify the energy conversion equipment, e.g. type of generator, energy storage equipment, and/or back-up supply (the back-up supplies can be non-renewable, if necessary). The report should also demonstrate how the energy conversion system connects. Efficiencies should be included and approximate energy/power outputs calculated. The energy conversion equipment should be large enough to meet the requirements of the school. Storage quantity should be calculated and justified. Basic specifications of equipment should be given.
Costs and CO2 emissions
As far as possible, give data on the expected costs of energy supply equipment and their running costs, taking into account likely life-times of batteries, etc. Compare the cost, energy production and size with a second energy option to justify the choice of technology, this can bea non-renewable source. Also calculate approximate CO2 savings relative to a fossil fuel energy source.
Your report should be MAXIMUM 6 pages, following the template provided. Do not waste time/space writing general background information about renewable energy, but do include your rationale for your design decisions.
