Course Prerequisites

MA 1124 or MA1424 or MA 1132 or equivalent.

Course Description

This is an introductory course to probability and statistics. It affords the student some acquaintance with both probability and statistics in a single term. Topics in Probability include combinatorics; mathematical treatment of chance; Binomial, Poisson, Uniform,

Exponential, Normal and other distributions; expectation of random variables; the Central Limit Theorem and the normal approximation. Topics in Statistics include study of basic data description and summaries, sampling distribution of sample mean and sample variance; normal, t-, and Chi-square distributions; confidence intervals; testing of hypotheses; least  square regression model. Applications to Computer Engineering, Financial Engineering, and other engineering subjects are integrated into the course.

Course Information and Grading

Class participation and your homework accumulate points towards your final grade.  It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of homework deadlines. No late homework will be

accepted.

Formula for Final Grade:

20%   Homework and in class performance. Attendance is mandatory.

50%   The 2 midterm exams given during the semester before the Final Exam.

30%   Comprehensive Final Exam

Summer 2021 Exam Dates:

Exam 1:  June 4, 2023

Exam 2:  June 20, 2023

Final Exam: July 2, 2023

Examinations: Three exams throughout the semester. They will be in class, and each will be exactly 2 hours long.

Homework: There will be five homework assignments (roughly one per week) and will consist of problems from the textbook.  The problem list (with the due dates) appears below and will also be posted on Brightspace.
