Ethical Management Problem Assignment

Semester 1, 2023

This document provides the template for your assignment. Please remove the highlighted text before submitting your assignment.

Section 1: Introduction

Write a brief introduction that provides a succinct summary of all of the following: 1) the ethical management problem, 2) the focus of the three journal articles, 3) the three recommendations.

150 words

Section 2: Ethical problem facing managers

Use the five (or more) news articles to describe the real-world ethical problem facing managers. Provide a comprehensive explanation of a single management problem with a clear and well- justified connection to ethics.

One option is to spend a paragraph explaining how your management problem relates to planning and/or controlling and/or leading and a second paragraph explaining the ethical component of the problem.

You do not need to summarise each news article. Instead synthesise the news articles to help you describe the ethical problem facing managers.

You should cite a minimum of five news articles in this section. This section should not contain more than 10% direct quotes from the news articles (i.e., 45 words).

450 words

Section 3: Summary of journal articles

This section should be structured into three paragraphs with one 150-word paragraph written on each journal article Make sure all three articles are relevant to ethics and are published in ABDC-listed journals.

This section should not contain more than 10% of direct quotes from the journal articles (i.e., 45 words).

Journal article 1

Write 150 words discussing the insights this article offers on ethics. Rather than describing the whole article, focus on summarising the key insight that you learned about ethics.

One option is to paraphrase the author’s ideas and insights into your own words by answering the following questions:

· What question is the author(s) trying to answer in their research?

· What did they find?

· How are their findings interesting and relevant to the management problem you have chosen?

· What new insights does the article offer?

150 words

Journal article 2

As for journal article 1

150 words

Journal article 3

As for journal article 1

150 words

Section 4: Application of journal articles to the ethical problem facing managers

In this section you should show how one insight from each journal article relates to the ethical problem facing managers that you described in Section 2. You should use these insights to explain the ethical elements that were done well and the ethical elements that needed improving.

You might also comment on whether the management evidence from the journal articles seems to support or contradict what happened in practice. For example, the journal articles might recommend a proactive approach to customer privacy during cyber security attacks, but the news articles might show that managers tend to be reactive.

Be sure to cite each journal article as you discuss it, so it is clear which insight came from which journal article.

This section should not contain direct quotes from the news articles or the journal articles.

600 words.

Section 5: Recommendations

In this section you should outline three recommendations that logically flow from the application section. Given everything you have read, what advice would you give to a manager, leader, or organisation who needed to respond to a similar ethical problem in the future? For example, if your application suggested that a certain approach led to unethical behaviour you might recommend an alternative approach.

You may make one recommendation per journal article OR three recommendations that are a synthesis of the three articles. Either way it should be clear that you have incorporated ideas from all three journal articles to make your recommendations.

Be sure to cite each journal article as you discuss it, so it is clear how the recommendations relate to each article.

This section should not contain more than 10% of direct quotes from the news articles or journal articles (i.e. 35 words).
