Assignment Information

Module Name: [Power Semiconductor Devices and Converters]

Module Code: [6009CEM]

Assignment Title: [Coursework]

Assignment Due: [Friday, April 5 th, 2024, 18:00 UK time]

Assignment Credit: [5 credits]

Word Count (or equivalent): [up to 1500 words +/- 10%]

Assignment Type:

Percentage Grade (Applied Core Assessment). You will be provided with an overall grade between 0% and 100%. You have one opportunity to pass the assignment at or above 40%.

Assignment Task

After completion of this coursework the students would be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of device structures and how they are created

2. Simulate device structures

3. Critically evaluate how various switching techniques affect the converter operation.

Report on Laboratory Activities

The coursework will be based on the following laboratory activities:

1.  Semiconductor Device simulation and characterisation (DC Characteristics/dynamic behaviour testing at various operating conditions for Power Diodes, MOSFETs, IGBTs).

2. Buck and Boost converter operation and analysis. 3: DC/AC converter/Inverter operation and analysis.

4. Power converters switching techniques - PWM signal generation.

You would have to write a report on all these activities and there is a total word limit of up to fifteen hundred (1500) words for this report. You can share results/figures with your laboratory group members, but your report needs to be written individually.

In the report for an activity, please answer all the questions related to each laboratory activity, according to the lab sheets that will be available in Aula.

Please provide graphs/images/figures demonstrating the results that you obtained in the simulations or the  hands-on  laboratory setups. You are supposed to demonstrate  a  high  level of understanding thorough critical analysis supported by mathematical and theoretical background.

This part of the report will be marked based on the following:

Tasks

Submission Instructions:

Your coursework needs to be submitted in Aula and you should submit a single report as a single Microsoft Document file.

Marking and Feedback

How will my assignment be marked?

Your assignment will be marked by the module team.

How will I receive my grades and feedback?

Provisional marks will be released once internally moderated.

Feedback will be provided by the module team alongside grades release.

Students can access their feedback by sending an email to the module team.

Your provisional marks and feedback should be available within 2 weeks (10 working days).

What will I be marked against?

Details of the marking criteria for this task can be found at the bottom of this assignment brief.

Assessed Module Learning Outcomes

The Learning Outcomes for this module align to the marking criteria which can be found at the end of

this brief. Ensure you understand the marking criteria to ensure successful achievement of the assessment task. The following module learning outcomes are assessed in this task:

1.    Demonstrate knowledge of device structures and show understanding of how devices operate and used in converter topologies.

2.    Design power converter topologies and analyse their operation.

3.    Understand and critically evaluate how various switching techniques affect the converter operation.
