Assignment 3 – IMAGE MAKING

 This assignment is worth 10%, make sure that you work hard in between classes and photograph everything you do.

You will be creating your zine (mini comic) based on an original story. In this assignment you will be creating the images (source material) for the zine and the outcome.

TASK ONE: THEME SELECTION

1. Create a new ppt for this assignment. Add your full name, student ID number and “Image Making” to the first slide.

2. Start a brainstorm of themes and topics that interest you. Research on the internet to help you pick a topic. For example:

3. Choose a topic / theme that you can create

4. Complete a word bank related to your theme.

On the next slide, discuss your idea and why you have chosen it.

YOUR IDEA CAN REFERENCE A STORY FROM POP CULTURE (E.G HARRY POTTER) OR BE SOMETHING 100% NEW

TASK TWO: MOOD BOARD

1. Image search your topic / theme online. Collect images that help to portray your topic and to inspire you. Have a look at your word bank and search for images of the objects and locations that you have researched. Add these to a slide in your ppt to create a mood board.

2. Gather images to help you choose appropriate colours for your theme. Add these ideas to your mood board with a colour palette.

TASK THREE: ARTIST MODEL

1. Look at the ppt shared about Image Making Artist Models. Choose 1-2 artist models from the list.

2. Collect images that help to portray your topic and to inspire you.

3. Write down why these images inspire you and what you may try to recreate for your own idea.

TASK FOUR: STORYBOARDING

1. Research some different story board for books/comics/movies. Write down what you like about these storyboards / how you can try these ideas for your own story.

2. Draw a 4-8 panel basic storyboard for your story. This storyboard could show: The introduction of your story (a landscape of the scene, a drawing of your character), your character interacting within their landscape, your character having some kind of dialogue (this could be with another character or thinking to themselves), something happening in the story (they find an item, move to another location etc), conclusion.

TASK FIVE: RESEARCH AND PLANNING

1. Search for 4 different book designs/comic books/manga etc that inspire you for your own zine presentation.

2. Write down the names and share examples in your ppt and explain what you like about their layout, colour scheme, typography choices, cover page etc.

3. Begin to plan out what the pages of you book will look like. You need to decide what typography is appropriate for your story. Find some inspiration and download fonts if necessary.

4. You should be sketching out some basic layout ideas on a piece of paper or digitally.

TASK SIX: WRITE YOUR STORY/DIALOUGE (THIS MAY BE OPTIONAL)
While it is not necessary for your story to include a lot of writing. It is important to plan out IF you will have writing in your story and what that writing could look like.

1. Looking at your inspiration and research begin to plan out what you will write for your story.

2. Using the resources provides

3. Share your story with another person, this could be a classmate or someone who does not do Design. Get them to read the story and ask for their feedback, add this to your ppt:
- Does the story make sense to them?
- Are there any grammatical errors?
- Does the story feel appropriate for the age group (target audience?)
- Is there anything missing from the story

4. Send your story to your teacher for feedback.

5. Make any changes to your story necessary.

TASK SEVEN: IMAGE MAKING

Make a collection of at least 10 images, some of the images will be the source material for the zine. Please note some of these images will be very simple e.g backgrounds

1. You will be taught different art making techniques each week: pencil sketching, water colours, paper collage, painting, creating backgrounds, sculpture, modelling clay. If you have another technique you would like to explore you may do so

2. After learning each technique, you may CHOOSE if you want to use it for your storybook or not.  

You must keep evidence of HOW these images have been created. Take photos and screenshots and add this to your ppt.

3. Take photos of all the images that you make/ your creative process.
Add these to your ppt with 2-4 images per slide.
Label your slides clearly so that we know what task your images for, along with photos and annotations of how you made your images.

TASK EIGHT: CREATE YOUR ZINE & PRINT IT OUT

1. Using the resources provided, create the layout for your zine.  You need to be mindful of layout, grids, margins etc.

2. Add your illustrations to the book pages, make any adjustments as needed.

3. Add your writing to book pages, remember to choose typography that is fitting for your story and easy to read.

4. Make any last-minute adjustments to your book, check your spelling/layout/illustrations/colours/order of pages etc.

5. Print out your book pages then trim them as necessary and fold each page so they fit together to make the book.

TASK NINE: ZINE EXHIBITION & PRESENTATION

Each of you will present your final zine in the classroom for an exhibition.

For your presentation you will share the following things:

- A picture of your final product (the front cover of your book for example) and explain what your story is about.

- Any inspiration for your book design.

- What you found most difficult about the process

- What you found most rewarding or interesting about the process.

Examples of the types of ‘images’ you can make:

· Illustrations (digital drawings or on paper)

· Painting (paint with tomato sauce, paint, ink, water colour or other material)

· Sculpture (using clay, sculpt with food, marshmallows, household objects or play doh)

· Photography (plan and stage a photo shoot with quality lighting and models/objects)

· Collage (digital photoshopping or with collage with paper/magazines)

· Paper models (architectural models or other paper sculptures)

YOU WILL BE MARKED ON:

· Theme selection and concept (understanding of your theme)

· Mood board / research / planning.

· Storyboard & sketches.

· The quality of the 10+ images you have made.

· Creativity of your work (is your idea unique and interesting, does it show your effort)

· Engagement in the class activities.

· The final product (is the zine in the right order, is there any issues with the quality of the print, are there spelling errors etc)

· Presentation of your ppt (Work is well presented and easy to see, correct headings etc)
