Essay on The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

We’ve been reading short stories from Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Pick one of the following options for your essay:

1.   What is Sherlock Holmes’ attitude towards Irene Adler, profiled in “A Scandal in  Bohemia”? Based on the story as a whole (and other stories), why do you think he feels this way? In your interpretation of a story, you will use passages of the book itself to support key assertions.

2.   After the confession of Mr. John Turner in “The Boscombe Valley Mystery,” why  does Holmes say, “There, but for the grace of God, goes Sherlock Holmes”? Based on your own experiences and readings, do you think he has a good point?

3.   In “The Speckled Band,” when Holmes searches the room of Dr. Grimesby Roylott,  he says, “[I]t is a wicked world.” What specifically is he referring to? Based on your own experience and your readings, do you think he’s right about the world?

4.   In what way does Holmes deal with the thief in “The Blue Carbuncle”?  Based on your own experiences and your readings, do you think this is appropriate?

5.   In “The Beryl Coronet,” Alexander Holder discusses his son, Arthur, and his wife’s death.  In what way has Alexander Holder raised up Arthur?  Based on your own experiences and your readings, do you think the father has been wise in the way he brought up his son?

Make sure you take on the stories themselves and not any film or television version. This is argument: you’ll need to have a thesis and 2 or 3 developed paragraphs that support that thesis. You can use this outline:

I. Introduction

A.  Note the story’s title and author

B.  Directed summary

C.  Your thesis

II. Body Paragraph A

III. Body Paragraph B

(IV. Body Paragraph C)

V. Conclusion
