EEE210 – Energy conversion and power system fundamentals

Coursework 1

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

You are a power grid operator responsible for maintaining the power balance in the grid. Right now, you have the following data in hand:

Power Plant:

•     Capacity: 200 MW

•     Ramp rate: 40 MW/hour

•    The minimal power: 40 MW

•     Incremental cost of generation: $30/MW Demand response program:

•     Capacity: 0 - 50 MW

•     Ramp rate: 50 MW/second

•     Cost of demand response: $50/MW

For the system level

     Cost of power excess/shortage: $100/MW

Questions:

1.   If the total demand is 200  MW,  PV could generate 30  MW at this time, without considering the demand response capacity, what is the power balance in the grid? Is there an excess or shortfall of power? (20 marks)

2.   Suppose the demand in the grid is 230 MW, and the output of PV is 50 MW(fixed value), determine

the optimal power of the power plants and the demand response program to meet the demand while minimizing costs. (30 marks)

** You should present the detailed process using the graph method to justify the derivation process.

3.   Suppose the demand drops to 170 MW and keeps consistent for the next 1 hour. Initially, the power of the power plant and demand response site is 80 MW and 0 MW, respectively. The output power for the PV station is 30 MW (fixed value) initially and will drop to 10 MW (fixed value) in the last second of the next hour.

l Determine the optimal power output of the power plant and the demand response program after 1 hour at a minimal cost. (30 marks)

** You should present the detailed process using the graph method to justify the derivation process.

l Discuss the importance of demand response to real-time economic dispatch. (Maximum 100 words) (20 marks)

Please show detailed steps in model formulation, relaxation and solutions, every step counts.
