MATH 1023 College Algebra, MATH 0112 Review for College Algebra Summer I 2024

Quizzes: These assignments require the student to demonstrate understanding of the daily lessons and will   cover one to two sections of material. The student will be allowed to complete each quiz 1 time and each quiz has a time limit of 30 - 45 minutes.

Bonus Opportunities: Each day there will be a bonus opportunity in the form of a quiz retake. To earn the retake, the student must earn a 90% or higher on the weekly Section(s) Extra Practice Assignment. After completing the assignment, a second attempt will open for the weekly quiz and if the student earns a higher score on the quiz, the highest grade will count. No other bonus or retake assignments will be given throughout the semester.

Proctored Unit Exams: There will be four proctored unit exams. They will be administered through Canvas using the MyLab & Mastering program and will need to be proctored using HonorLock. For more information concerning HonorLock, visit https://www.asub.edu/distance-education/. Students will be allowed to use their notes during these exams but are not allowed use to cellphones or additional websites. Each exam will have a time limit. These exams will be automatically graded after they are submitted.  This will be the only time that the student will be able to review them. Students must submit a photo of their work for each exam by completing the assignments called “exam work.” If the student fails to submit work, the exam grade may be reduced up to 50%.

Proctored Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive proctored final exam. It will be administered through Canvas using the MyLab & Mastering program and will need to be proctored using HonorLock. Students are only allowed to use a calculator and blank paper during this exam. Notes are not allowed during the final exam. This exam will be automatically graded after it is submitted.  This will be the only time that the student will be able review it. Students must submit a photo of their work for each exam by completing the assignments called “exam work.” If the student fails to submit work, the exam grade may be reduced up to 50%.

Academic Honesty Policy: Academic integrity is expected of all students.  Violation of this policy is a serious breach of conduct and may result in severe disciplinary penalties, which could include receiving a “F” grade for the course. Violation of the academic integrity policy includes cheating and plagiarism:  for example, copying tests or assignments, giving or getting unauthorized help on tests, using unauthorized aids during tests, possessing tests  without permission of the instructor, purchasing papers or assignments, using the ideas or words of another person without proper documentation, using a class assignment for credit in more than one class without consent of the instructors, or committing any other act of academic dishonesty. Please note that using websites and apps, such as Mathway and Photomath, to complete homework, quizzes, tests and activities is a form of academic dishonesty. By using one of these websites or apps, you are violating the academic honesty policy.

Math 1023 Learning Objectives:

The student will demonstrate:

• The ability to perform and solve basic function operations and algebraic problems using appropriate vocabulary

• The appropriate use of technology to supplement and enhance conceptual understanding, visualization, and inquiry

• The ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources to solve problems and interpret results.

The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of functions including:

• Absolute values

• Quadratic

• Polynomial

• Rational

• Logarithmic

• Exponential

• Graphing of inequalities and quadratic inequalities

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the application of the following topics:

• Systems of equations

• Matrices

This course satisfies the following Student Learning Outcome: Creative and Analytical Thinking.

ASUB Online Participation Policy: Consistent participation in class activities and/or communication with the instructor is required.   Students who do not participate for two consecutive weeks in a 16-week semester or one week in an 8-week or summer session, can result in being dropped for excessive absence, which will result in a WX or failing grade, recorded immediately.

Attendance is recorded on a weekly basis for all classes. Excessive absences can have an effect on a student's financial aid.

Students enrolled in this course are also expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner and conform to standards considered to be in good taste at all times.  Failure to meet these standards of student conduct can result in a student being dropped from the course and given an F on their transcript.

LATE WORK POLICY: Every assignment has a set due date.  All assignments can be completed as early as the student wishes, with the exception of the final exam.

•    “Videos & Textbook” and “Problem Set” assignments can be completed past the due dates, with a

penalty of a 10% deduction each day. “Review” assignments can be completed late prior to the exam due date. “Discussion” assignments cannot be completed after the final post is due. If the initial post of the discussion board assignment is late, it will result in a reduction of the overall assignment score. Two homework assignment grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.

•    Quizzes – “Quiz” assignments can be completed after their due date, with a 10% deduction each day. Two quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.

•    The proctored Unit Exams and Final Exam must be taken at their designated time. Students will not be allowed to make up an exam.

Note:  All assignments from the first two days of class will be graded without a penalty and all assignments that can be completed late close on June 26th  at 11:59 pm.

TIME MANAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS: In accordance with federal law and federal regulations, for every  class hour, the typical student should expect to spend at least two clock hours of problem solving, reading, reviewing, organizing notes, preparing for coming exams/quizzes and other activities that enhance learning.

Since this course is a 3 hour online summer course, student should expect to spend at least 2-3 hours a day, five days a week.  Each assignment has a recommended minimum time requirement listed in parenthesis of   the title of the assignment to help the student gauge the daily time requirement. This is a minimum time suggestion meaning that some students may need longer to complete the assignment.

It is recommended that the student does not immediately go to the homework for each section, but rather review the material to prepare for the homework.

RESPONSE INFORMATION: I check my ASUB Outlook email frequently, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.  Any email received after 5 pm may not be answered until the next morning. Please  keep this in mind when completing homework assignments.  A quick way to contact me is using Canvas messages.

EXAM PROCTORING INFORMATION: Online students are required to take at least one proctored exam, usually the final exam.  Some courses may require students to take more than one proctored exam.  ASUB works to ensure exams are proctored free of charge.   However, there are instances where a student will be charged a minimal fee to take a proctored exam.    For specific information review the information posted under the Proctored Exam Information link/module within this course in CANVAS.

A proctored exam is an exam overseen for identity verification and to ensure the integrity of the exam.  A student's entire face should be visible during the proctored exam. Be sure and check with your instructor for the approved resources for your exam. Using unapproved resources is behavior that may be counted as infringing on the integrity of the exam.  People in your workspace are not allowed.
