Deadline and Submission:
This assignment is due by 23:59 EST, Friday, June 14, 2024. Your assignment is to be submitted in Word format through Avenue to Learn. Your assignment will be automatically filtered through turnitin.com once it is uploaded to Avenue. Please save your document with the following file name: “[Surname First Initial] ANTHRO 1AA3, Assignment 2” .

As stated in the course syllabus, there will be a 10% penalty for every day the assignment is late, for up to five calendar days, including weekends. After five calendar days from the original deadline, late submissions will not be accepted and you will receive a grade of zero (0%) for this assignment.
Since this assignment is worth 25% of your final grade, only Faculty-approved MSAFs will be accepted. Students must contact Dr. Siek (and their TA cc’d) within 24 hours of receiving notice that the MSAF has been processed to arrange extensions.
If you are registered with SAS, please email Dr. Siek and your TA at least one week before the deadline to make arrangements for extensions, if needed. Non-SAS extensions will only be given for extenuating circumstances. Having other course work or midterms due at the same time is not an extenuating circumstance.
The Assignment:
You must first find a non-scholarly article and summarize it, identifying the key themes and points. The non-scholarly source should be a full-length, written article and it must be anthropological in focus, relating to one of the major themes of the class (sex, food or death).
Videos, podcasts, documentaries, blogs, encyclopedia entries, etc. are not permitted. Please include a weblink to the article, state where it is from and when it was published. Feel free to consult with your TA ahead of time to ensure your chosen article is appropriate and relevant for this assignment.
Next, you will create an annotated bibliography of three peer-reviewed, academic sources related to the same topic of your chosen non-scholarly article. Your bibliography should have your references in alphabetical order by author surname, and each should be immediately followed by an annotation. Your annotations should provide a discussion about how it relates to the non-scholarly article. Please do not select sources that are all from the same author or all from the same journal or book. You may choose one chapter from the textbook that is not listed as one of the required readings for this class.
Lastly, you will write a conclusion that draws together any key themes or ideas that emerged from your research and how it related to the non-scholarly article.
Other Requirements
Title Page: A title page is not required for this assignment. Instead, please include your name, student number and the course code in the document header.
Word Counts: Your non-scholarly article summary must be between 200-250 words. Your annotations must be 150-200 words each. Your conclusion must be between 200-250 words.
References and Citations: All references and citations should be in APA format. In-text citations are required for your conclusion only. Footnotes and endnotes are not permitted. Please refer to the McMaster library and Avenue for resources regarding proper APA referencing. You do not need a separate reference list for this assignment, since all of your sources will be in the annotated bibliography.
Reference for the Textbook: The textbook for this class is comprised of multiple chapters and readings taken from different sources. For simplicity and because this is a unique situation, please use the following format when referencing the textbook. The author names can be found on the top of the first page of each chapter.

Formatting: Please use Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font with 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins and page numbers. Your paper should be double-spaced. Make sure to proofread your paper before submitting, as marks are allocated for spelling, grammar, etc. Refrain from first-person, slang or contractions (eg. don’t, won’t); treat this as a formal paper.
