ISM 360: Management Information Systems

Summer 2024

I. Introduction

I love teaching, and I want you all to succeed. I value my responsibility to help you learn in this class, and I look forward to helping you succeed.

I am happy to meet with you in my office, by video, or by phone. We can schedule an appointment for meetings. I have time available for you. Email works well too. I will try to reply to email in a timely manner. However, I rarely check my email outside of business hours, and I never check it on the weekends. You are also welcome to text me for quicker responses and smaller interactions—I am happy to answer questions by text.

II. Catalog Description

This course presents information systems used by organizations and work groups with an emphasis on system development, management, and effective use.

Business Major Status and ISM 120

IV. Course Learning Objectives

Learning objectives for this course include:

· Why information systems are needed and the benefits they bring.

· Identify the components of an information system.

· Identify the components of typical IT systems.

· Role of information systems in organizations and how these roles relate to organizational objectives and organizational structure.

· Role of information systems in strategic and operational functions.

· Use of computer information systems for competitive advantage.

· How information systems increase productivity.

· Overview of typical business processes.

· Risks associated with information systems and how to mitigate them.

· The importance of information security.

· Advantages and disadvantages of associated computer technology used in on systems.

· Basic concepts of systems, system organization, and information flows.

· Knowledge of basic techniques and elementary skills in representing system structures.

· Analysis and design of business systems.

· Enterprise Systems Business Processes and their components.

· Introduction to ERP using SAP.

· Introduction to CRM using Salesforce.

· Database Systems, SQL and their importance to enterprise systems.

· Management dimensions related to enterprise and e-business systems.

· Develop teamwork skills through occasional teamwork activities.

· Develop public speaking skills through team presentations twice per semester.

VI. Graded Activities

Unless specified, all graded activities are individual work. You are not to work with anyone else on the graded activities. You must not borrow from or copy anyone else’s work or share your work with anyone else.

Textbook Reading

There will be three textbook chapters to read each week. The readings from the textbook will help you learn about information systems in business and managing information systems. I recommend that you try to read each of the three chapters for each week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. However, the hard deadline for the weekly readings is Sunday night. Each of these chapters are worth 10 points, and they are graded as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. You will mark your reading on Canvas.

Textbook Concept Application Problems

There will be three textbook concept application problems each week. These problems are designed to help you integrate and apply the knowledge you gain from each chapter you read. I recommend that you try to complete each of the three textbook application assignments for each week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. However, the hard deadline for the weekly assignments is Sunday night. Each of these assignments are worth 10 points, and they are graded as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. You will submit your responses on Canvas.

Projects

There are 12 technology-skills based projects in this class. You will complete 3 projects every week. Detailed project instructions will be provided for each project. I recommend that you try to complete the three projects for each week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. However, the hard deadline for the weekly projects is Sunday night. Each of these projects are worth 30 points, and they are graded as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Projects will be submitted on Canvas. Also, projects must follow the format and style that I teach in the course, or they will be rejected as unsatisfactory.

Final Project

You will have a final project which requires you to apply things you learned throughout the course. The final project consists of a spreadsheet component and a report component. The project is worth 100 points and is due by 11:59pm on Tuesday, July 2.

VII. Grading Policy

Your final letter grade in this course is based on your satisfactory completion of the different graded activities and your performance on the final project. The specific points requirements to achieve the different final grades are shown below.

A = 630-700 points

B = 560-629 points

C = 490-559 points

D = 420-489 points

F = 0-419 points

VIII. Course Policies

Late Work

Assignments and projects are due each week on Sunday night by 11:59pm. Because this is a short, fast-paced summer course, it is essential that you keep up with all assignments and projects and submit them on time. However, I will provide a 24-hour grace period for assignments and projects, and you may submit them by Monday night without penalty. This policy does not apply to the final project. Any other exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Attendance/Engagement

Because this is an online course, attendance is not taken. However, it is necessary for you to engage with the course (sign into Canvas) and complete the full set of projects each week. If you fail to engage in the course for any week, you will not succeed in this summer course.
