2019 EXAMINATIONS

PART II

MCS.200: Critical Cultural Theory

SECTION A

1.   ‘There’s a way in which using the tools of new media, activists can circumvent what might be thought to be the mainstream or dominant press and try to build the story themselves, using platforms such as their organization’s website, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook’ (Cathy Cohen). How has media activism helped to raise awareness of intersectional feminist ideas?

2.    'The Orient as pure abstract knowledge is an object to be consumed, worked with, used, and domesticated' (Sharma and Sharma 2003). Discuss, drawing on two examples of contemporary media Orientalism.

SECTION B

3.   "Prior to the consolidation of scientific racism in the nineteenth century, the term   “race” was used very much in the way that the world “culture” is used today" (Paul Gilroy).  How does the shift from 'race' to 'culture' produce new forms of racism?

Draw on examples in your answer.

4.   "It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism" (Mark

Fisher).  Drawing on examples, critically discuss how neoliberal capitalism is made 'common-sense' in culture, from which there is 'no alternative'.

SECTION C

5.   'The Truman Show ends with Truman finally escaping the simulation for the world of the “real”; The Florida Project ends with Moonie finally escaping the “real” for the world of simulation'. Do you agree? Explain your answer with specific reference to themes and concepts we explored in the Michaelmas Term.

6.   Drawing explicitly on themes and concepts we explored in the Lent Term, compare   and contrast the representations of professional journalism in Nightcrawler and The Post.
