POL SCI 20: Short Paper Assignment #2

Spring 2024

Overview

The field of world politics is filled with debates.  Below, you’ll find three issues extending from the materials we have covered in class. Your task is to write a concise, two-page paper responding to one of the following three questions, offering your position in the debate.

1. Protectionism vs. Free Trade: In light of recent economic trends, should [your home coun- try] pursue more protectionist policies or support more free trade for economic growth?

2. U.S. Dollar vs. Others: Will the U.S. dollar remain the dominant global reserve currency, or will other currencies like the euro or Chinese yuan challenge its position?

3. Amplified vs.  Reduced Inequality:  Will inequality between countries be amplified or re- duced given the rapid advancement of technology, particularly artificial intelligence?

Your Paper Should:

    1. Clearly articulate your position on one of the topics. There is no right or wrong side because

these questions are inherently debatable.   Avoid saying, “each trend could happen," or, “each side is reasonable." Instead, provide your thoughts on which side is more likely to happen and what is more correct despite the arguments on both sides.

2. While presenting your argument, address at least one significant counterargument thought- fully and rebut it.

3. Provide data, academic literature, or empirical evidence to substantiate your viewpoint. To do so, cite at least three sources with in-text citations, which can include reputable news sources, books, academic journal articles, and databases. Note that the textbook and lecture materials do not count as one of the three required sources. Try to avoid unreliable internet sites. As a rule of thumb, if an article isn’t written by someone affiliated with a major news organization, a university, a well-known think tank, or a recognized public figure (e.g., a former member of the U.S. National Security Council), be cautious in trusting that source.

4. Follow these format guidelines:

No more than two pages of text, no less than one page (works cited don’t count)

 Double-spaced

  12-point font

  1-inch margins
