Total points: 10

Homework Sheet 6: Structural Path Analysis

For this example, the supply chain tree (i.e., A and q matrix) is given as follows:

For final demand, assume 100$ worth of steel. The total footprint is 9458 kg CO2.

1. In your own words (A) If you want to understand the CO2 footprint that your company causes, how do the contents of today’s lecture help you understand your supply chain emissions, and how can you identify the top 10 most CO2-intensive nodes of your supply chain tree? What would you do if your A and q matrix are of large dimensions? For this exercise, assume that the concepts of A-matrix and q-data are given (no need to explain A and q). (Please make sure your answers are within 800 words). (3 points)

2. (A) Calculate the footprints for all tier-1, tier-2, tier-3 and tier-4 paths that have “steel” as the final node. In case there is confusion around what a tier-4-path is, here is an example: C->G->S->S. (3 points)

3. (A) List the top 10 paths in descending order and indicate how much each path contributes to the total footprint in percent. Also state the tier of each path. Use the tables in Huang et al (download the paper here: http://bit.ly/2HBYNeI ) as a guide for how to list of the top 10 paths. (2 points)

4. (A) What are your observations of the supply chain impact contributions you just calculated (2 points)
