Course: BUAD801 Decision Support Tools and Techniques

Stream: 223 & 224

Due: 4pm, Friday May 24, 2024 (soft copy submission through Moodle only)

POINTS to NOTE:

1.   There are 100 marks for this assignment which is 20% of the final course grade.

2.   The word limit for this assignment is 2,000 words (+/- 10%), excluding references, figures, tables, and appendixes.

3.   Use Arial or Times New Roman font size 12 and 1.5 line spacing.

4.   Ensure you follow academic citation and referencing requirements, as failure to do so may invoke penalties. Use APA (7th  ed.). A reference list is required.

5.  You are also required to reference the use of any tools / software / application used. This includes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to paraphrase or proofread, which requires a statement where applicable.

6.   Upon submission your assignment will be checked for copied materials as well as the use of AI (artificial intelligence), with penalties to be applied where appropriate and if not appropriately referenced.

7.  You may submit your assignment as a draft submission (Moodle/Turnitin) to check similarity prior to making your final submission.

8.   Late submissions incur a 5% penalty (5 marks) for each 24-hour period up to 96 hours

(after that time, your mark will be recorded as zero).

9.  An extension may be granted if,  within the prescribed timeframe, you submit an 'Assignment Extension Application' form with supporting documentation (e.g., a medical certificate) to the Programme Administration Unit.

10. As part of pass requirements for this course, you are required to pass each learning outcome at least once in this course.

Learning Outcomes:

As set out in your Course Outline, this assignment requires you to:

LO1 Critically analyse the nature of a complex business problem and identify suitable models and quantitative tools to generate solutions.

Preparation:

Identify a suitable small to medium sized business that you can conveniently travel to and observe from the outside. A specific branch of a larger business can also be selected. The business should have a website from which you can gain an understanding of the operations of the business. Details of the business (name, address, website) are to be included on the title page as well as the (map) location of the business. Also include a link to the business details via:

https://companies-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz

If the business is not on the companies register, then provide a link to the business website.

Student may alternatively select a business they work at or have previously done so. Permission from the lecturer must be obtained to do this.

The answer should be in an essay answer for each requirement. References are to be obtained by literature review to  support your answers. References are to be provided and should be referred to in the text of the answer.

Submit the above information to your lecturer for approval by email to [email protected] at least 10 days prior to the assignment completion date. Subject of email to be:

After gaining your lecturer’s approval for the organization of your choice:

1.  Critically evaluate an operations related complex business problem that you believe would be faced by the selected business.  (A complex problem is a problem that requires consideration of several competing variables to arrive at an optimal solution).       (50 marks)

2.  Identify quantitative model(s) or tool(s) that can be applied in  solving the identified business problem, describe how the tools would be applied and critically evaluate the use of the selected tool(s).                     (50 marks)
