Question:

Government should shift resources from programmes that support generic entrepreneurship efforts to those that support small businesses with high growth potential. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Critically analyse the available evidence and argue your case.

Executing the Brief:

1.   This is a focused question asking you to illustrate an awareness of some of the key

debates we have covered around small business growth as mode of economic and social benefit.

2.   Reflecting its subject matter, there isn't one 'right' answer, and the approach you take  and the argument you develop will be dependent on the applied evidence you’re using and the weighting of this in your argument.

3.   The essay is short, so be sure to present your argument clearly and ensure you make space to consider a range of evidence on this issue.

4.   Manage the marker's expectations with clear statements on the approach and argument you aim to develop in the analysis. There are no 'spoilers' in academic writing: say what you are going to argue and why, argue it (point-support-discussion), then say what you have argued, and reflect upon it. It is better to promise something small and deliver it, than to promise something huge and fail, or to promise/deliver nothing at all.

5.   Be sure to familiarize yourself with the grading criteria.

6.   The essay must be coherent with clear and logical arguments.

7.   Showcase your critical engagement with the academic literature and support your arguments with relevant empirical evidence. A number of important sources on this topic have been covered in the lectures, but these will also provide you with signposting to a much wider literature via both reference (those used in the article) and citation (where the article is referenced in other work). This is all easily accessible through tools such as Google Scholar


8.   A high quality of analysis considers HOW and WHY questions, applying ideas and comparing examples to each other. This is worth more than description (WHO/WHAT/WHEN).

9.   Avoid big quotations. It is generally better to paraphrase someone's idea in your own words (with a citation, of course) than it is to paste in (large) quotes. This allows you to keep the focus of the writing on your argument, and also makes combining and synergising ideas easier.

10. Use academic articles, journals and books. These can be supplemented by policy

documents, and credible sources of information to provide examples of practice where relevant.

11. Avoid referring to internet-based sources other than those listed in 10.
