Putting Health Psych into Practice Assignment 3

PSYCH 222B

Winter 2024

The goal of this assignment is to apply what you have learned about social support and coping better with stressful situations. There are two parts to this assignment: giving social support and receiving social support. You will be asked to give and receive social support and then write a paper reflecting on your experiences. Papers should be 1-2 pages, double-spaced.

Giving Social Support: Review the following three types of support described in the textbook and lecture: tangible support (also called instrumental or problem-focused support), informational support, and emotional support (see p. 159 of 11th edition, p. 152 of 10th edition and p. 149 of 9th edition). Find a way to provide one of these types of support to someone whom you think could use it right now because they are experiencing some kind of stressful or difficult circumstance. For instance, maybe you could help a busy family member cook dinner (tangible support), recommend a good TV show or podcast to a friend who is bored (informational support), or text a friend you haven’t talked to in a while to say hello and ask how they are doing (emotional support).

Receiving Social Support: Pick a stressful situation that you have experienced recently where you think it might be useful to have more social support. It’s fine to use one of the same situation that you used for the first two Putting Health Psychology into Practice assignments, or you can use a different one. Review the following three types of support described in the textbook and lecture: tangible support (also called instrumental or problem-focused support), informational support, and emotional support (see p. 159 of 11th edition, p. 152 of 10th edition, and p. 149 of 9th edition), and see if you can get one of these types of support to help you deal with your stressful situation (e.g., by asking someone for help, looking online for useful information, etc.). For instance, I (Prof. Levine) have found myself stressed out when some statistical software I was using kept giving me error messages. To deal with this stress, I have asked people to review my work and fix the problem for me (tangible support), have googled for information about how to fix the errors myself (informational support), and have commiserated with colleagues about the situation (emotional support). Note that you only have to pick one of those types of support for the purposes of this assignment.

After you have given and received support, write a paper in which you do the following:

· For the support you gave:

1. Describe the circumstances of the person/people who needed support (2 points; to get full credit, you should describe the circumstances in enough detail that we can understand your responses to points 2-4 below)

2. Describe what you did and whether this was tangible, informational, or emotional support. (3 points; to get full credit your response should show that you accurately understand the definition of tangible, informational, or emotional support)

3. Describe the result of your support (i.e., To the best of your knowledge, did it improve the situation and if so, how? Did it make things worse and if so, how? Did it have no effect?) (2 points; you will receive full credit as long as you answer this question)

4. Explain why you think the support you provided had the effect it did. (2 point; there are no right or wrong answers here, and you will receive full credit as long as you demonstrate that you have thought carefully about what happened and how it relates to the course material)

· For the support you provided:

1. Describe the stressful situation you were experiencing (2 points; to get full credit, you should describe the circumstances in enough detail that we can understand your responses to points 2-4 below)

2. Describe what support you sought out and whether this was tangible, informational, or emotional support. (3 points; to get full credit your response should show that you accurately understand the definition of tangible, informational, or emotional support)

3. Describe what happened when you requested the support. Did you get the support you requested? Did receiving or not receiving the support change how you were thinking or feeling about the situation or change something about the situation itself? (2 points; full credit as long as you respond to the questions here)

4. Explain why you think receiving or not receiving the support had the effect it did. (2 points; there are no right or wrong answers here, and to receive full credit, you should demonstrate that you have thought carefully about what happened and how it relates to the course material)

· Finally, reflect on what you learned about giving and receiving social support from this exercise. (2 points; responses that demonstrate careful consideration of both giving and receiving social support will receive full credit)
