Instructions on running multivariate regressions in Excel

1. To run regressions, you need to install Data Analysis package.

(1) Click on the “File” (Excel 2010) on the left-top corner

(2) Choose “Options”

(3) Click on the page “Add-Ins”

(4) Choose “ Analysis ToolPak”

(5) Click on “Go…” next to “Manager: Excel Add-ins” at the bottom of the page

(6) Check “Analysis Toolpak” and click “OK” 

2. Run multivariate regressions according to the following equation: Y=a+bX1+cX2+e

(1) Click on the “Data” Panel

(2) Click on the “Data Analysis”

(3) Choose “Regressions” and click “OK”

(4) Click the “Input Y Range:” cell, and then highlight to select all Y time series (including the column name) in yellow.

(5) Click the “Input X Range:” cell, and then highlight to select both X1 and X2 time series (including the column name) in blue.

(6) Check “Labels”

(7) Select “Output Range:” and click the Output Range cell, and then highlight a blank cell in your spreadsheet where you want to output your regression results.

(8) Check “Line Fit Plots” in Residuals

(9) Click on “OK”.

(10) Now you get a SUMMARY OUPUT, where the coefficients a, b, and c are highlighted in red, and their p-values highlighted in red show you whether the coefficients are significant different from zero.
