1. Derive the (local) extreme points of

f (x1 , x2 ) = x1(4) + x2(4) - x1(2) - x2(2) - 2x1 x2  on R2

and,  to the extent that you can,  use the second-order conditions to classify them as minima or maxima based on the positive or negative definiteness of the Hessian, respectively.

2. Derive all maximum and minimum points of

f (x1 , x2 ) = x1(2) + x2(2)  where xi  e [-10, 10] for all i.

3. Derive all maximum points of

f (x1 , x2 , x3 ) = x1(0) .3 x2(0) .3 x3(0) .4

subject to

x1 + x2 + x3  = 10.

4. Without explicitly solving (e.g. without using the method of Lagrangian multipliers), (a) Find the global maximum of

f (x1 , x2 , x3 ) = x1(2) + 2x2(2) + 3x3(2)

subject to

x1(2) + x2(2) + x3(2)  = 100. Assume xi  > 0 for all i.

(b) Find the global minimum of the same function subject to

x1(2) + x2(2) + x3(2)  > 100. Assume xi  > 0 for all i.
