MISY 262-012: Fundamentals of Business Analytics

Fall 2022

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course aims to develop analytical skills for understanding trends in data, building models, communicating analytical information effectively, and ethics in business data science/analytics. Together, we will work toward the following goals:

• Use data to answer important questions

• Develop willingness to approach hard problems without correct answers

· Apply ethical principles in our programming, modeling, and business data science/analytics practices

Using data requires coding skills, and answering questions with data requires modeling, deep understanding of each problem’s context, and communication skills. We’ll develop these components of problem solving in this course, and students will learn to program in R. Topics will include Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), visualizations, handling missing data and imputation, linear regression, and logistic regression. Programming and modeling serve an important role for today’s graduates, as solutions of the future will often be data driven. Both are challenging skills and take practice and attention to develop; plan to spend several hours per week on homework and exam/project preparation. To help students develop confidence using their new skills, this course highlights hands-on learning.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

· Learn the basic programming skills to adequately undertake data science analysis in R

· Understand and apply different data science skills including: Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), data cleaning, missing values and imputation/feature engineering (replacing missing data with substituted values), predictive (machine learning) linear and logistic regression.

· Learn to use data science open source resources to improve your programming such as: Github, Stack Overflow, & Rpubs

· Incorporate common data science tools in your projects: ggplot2 (R visualization library), UCI Machine Learning Repository (datasets to implement data science techniques/analyses)

COURSE MATERIALS (There are no required books)

· Other resources that will be used in this course: Github, Stack Overflow, Rpubs, Towards Data Science, & Analytics Vidhya among others that provide helpful resources concerning R and Python programming and explanation of methods for data science

COMPUTER/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

· You can use your own laptop or one of the computers in the computer lab.

COURSE STRUCTURE

· Every Monday in class I will give a 30-35 minute lecture discussing the topic for the week; for the remainder of the class each student is working on a specific issue via Canvas including: programming, self-assessment/team assessment, data science topics, and answering questions related to the lecture, book, and/or other resources. Every other week you will do Graded Labs are due 2 weeks after the material and example code are presented. These are due on Fridays. You will also have attendance prompts to assess course material knowledge and attendance.

· Every Wednesday in class, you will have 5 quizzes assessing course material knowledge, one every 2 weeks beginning in Week 4. A Final Exam will be given the last week of class on Wednesday.

PREREQUISITES

• Students must have already taken MATH 201 or STAT 200 (or equivalent). Probability distributions and hypothesis testing must be learned in advance of this course. ECON majors are required to take MATH 202, not this class

ATTENDANCE AND PREPARATION POLICY

• Attendance is assessed via attendance prompts. If your absent due to illness/other and you have an excused note per UD attendance policies, these can be made up during my physical or virtual office hours. Missing class to take another exam or to participate in another class activity is not excusable.

• After missing classes 2 times without an excuse, you will start to lose 5 points from your

final grade for each missing class and an additional 1 point for each time after that. For example, if you miss 2 classes without an excuse, there will be no deduction. However, if you miss 3 classes, 5 points will be deducted from your final grade. If you miss 5 classes, 7 points will be deducted from your final grade and so on.

• Absences on religious holidays listed in university calendars are recognized as an excused absence. Nevertheless, students are urged to remind the instructor of their intention to be absent on a particular upcoming holiday. Absences on religious holidays not listed in university calendars, as well as absences due to athletic participation or other extracurricular activities in which students are official representatives of the university, shall be recognized as excused absences when the student informs the instructor in writing during the first two weeks of the semester of these planned absences for the semester.

• Expect me to attend all in-class sessions. I expect the same of you. If I am to be absent, my

department chair or I will send you notice via email and Canvas as far in advance as possible.

• For weather/Covid emergencies, consult the campus home page. If the campus is open, class will be held. Also, per University of Delaware Covid protocols: You must wear a mask in class at all times. If you need to eat or have a snack while in class, please do so outside of the class

• Expect me to arrive on time for each class session. I expect the same of you.

• Expect me to prepare properly for each class session. I expect the same of you. Complete all background reading and assignments. You cannot learn if you are not prepared. The minimum

expectation is that for each class session, you have prepared by studying for at least twice as many hours as the class hours.

• Expect me to participate fully in each class session. I expect the same of you. Stay focused and involved. You cannot learn if you are not paying attention.

· No cell phone use in class is allowed.

COURSE GRADING (No late assignments accepted for any reason, especially since you have 2 weeks notice when assignments are due). Assignments must be uploaded as Rmarkdown, PDF, or screenshot files to Canvas. No emailed assignments accepted for any reason.

1.Individual Labs-25%: Labs are due two weeks after the related topic material is presented

2.Attendance Prompts-25%: Attendance prompts are in-class brief quizzes given every Monday to assess: knowledge of the specific material covered the week before, homework assignments, and attendance. These begin on Week 2.

3.Quizzes-25%: Quizzes are given every 2 weeks (Starting in Week 4) in class to assess knowledge of the material covered.

4.Final Exam-25%: The Final Exam will be cumulative and focus on all the work you have done prior in class and in the quizzes.
