Lab: Base Station Antenna Design

Introduction:

In this lab you will use the Antenna Toolbox in Matlab to design a base station antenna that operates in the 790-960MHz. You will use the “Antenna Designer” and “Antenna Array Designer” Apps in the   Antenna toolbox for this design task. A typical single band base station antenna such as 2P-2L-C1”   in its simplest format has a column of dipoles backed by a ground plane. Each dipole is linearly            polarised and either oriented as ±45 slant polarised or horizontal and vertically polarised as shown in the picture below. In a dual polarised arrangement, polarisations are orthogonal to each other,           therefore can be used for spatial diversity or spatial multiplexing.

Task:

You will be required to design a single polarised base station antenna that can achieve a minimum directivity of 16dBi on a 2.4mx0.5m  (length x width) ground plane. Prepare a report (max 2 pages with either word or PDF format) and submit via the Canvas submission link (emails not accepted). Following table indicate the information that needs to be included in the report with marking        criteria.

Additional guidance:

Use of Antenna Designer

•    Antenna Designer in matlab can be opened by typing “antennaDesigner” in the command window.

•    Design a dipole with a rectangular metal back plane and observe the scattering parameters and pattern performance.

Antenna Array Designer (Required for the report)

•   Type antennaArrayDesigner” in the command window.

•    Design a dipole array with multiple antenna elements in a linear arrangement and try to visualise the content required for the report.

•    You may usehttps://au.mathworks.com/help/antenna/gs/design-and-analysis-using- antenna-array-designer-app.htmlexample to help you get familiarise with the tool.
