Statistics for Business and Society
Course Description: An introduction to statistics with an emphasis on concepts and applications relevant in the Business and Society program. Students learn basic and practical statistical techniques to explore and analyze data. Emphasis is placed on statistical reasoning and the critical interpretation of statistical information such as that seen in the media and journals.
Students who wish to take a different statistics course may take any of the following instead of MATH 1532: SC/MATH 1131 3.00, HH/PSYC 2020 6.00, HH/PSYC 2021 3.00, SC/KINE 2050 3.00, AP/ADMS 2310 3.00, AP/ECON 2500 3.00, AP/GEOG 2420 3.00, SC/MATH 2560, AP/POLS 3300 6.00, AP/SOCI 3300 6.00.

Learning outcomes:
1) Master the fundamental descriptive statistical methodologies to present data;
2) Master the statistical theory about random variables, distributions;
3) Master the statistical theory about probability rules;
4) Capable to fit real-world problems into statistical models;
5) Capable to perform estimation based on collection of data;
6) Capable to perform inference based on collection of data.
7) Capable to apply excel for statistical data analysis.
Textbook:
The practice of statistics for business and economics. 5th Edition. By Layth C. Alwan, Bruce A. Craig, George P. Mccabe.
Lectures will not always follow the content in the textbook identically or in the same order as presented in the textbook.
Syllabus
Tentatively the lectures will cover Chapters 1 - 8.

* No makeup test will be given. Contact your instructor within 48 hours of the missed evaluation. If a valid explanation is provided for your absence, the weight of the test will be transferred to the final exam. Supporting documentation may be requested. Otherwise, a grade of zero will be given for the test.
* Do not write the test or exam, if you do not feel well. Once you wrote the test or exam, your paper will be graded and the grade will be recorded.

Communications: Make sure you are subscribed to Course Announcements in eClass (Moodle). You are responsible for being actively and regularly on Moodle to ensure that you have up-to-date course info.
The subject field of each York email should be carefully completed and should contain the course code “MATH1532”, your name, and your student ID number and your section number. It is requested that emails be sent to the instructor ONLY if the question(s) being asked cannot wait to be answered in the next scheduled lecture.
Tutorials: Assistance with mathematical questions on the course or the assignments will be available at Tutorial sessions that will start in the second week of the term. Details will
be posted on eClass.
Technology use and Privacy: Several platforms will be used in the course (e.g. eClass/ Moodle, Zoom etc,) through which students will interact with the course material, the course instructor and TAs, and with one another. Students shall note the following:
1. Zoom is hosted on servers in the US: This includes recordings done through Zoom.
2. If you have privacy concerns about your data when you join a Zoom session, provide only your first name or a nickname.
The system is configured in a way that all participants are automatically notified when a session is being recorded. In other words, a session cannot be recorded without you knowing about it.
