FALL 21 EC516 Problem Set 01

Problem 1.1

A)   Consider the complex exponential signal x(t) = 2e()*+, to answer each of the following questions

(a)  Is the signal x(t) periodic? Justify your answer.

(b)  Plot by hand the real part of x(t) as a function of t.

(c)  Plot by hand the imaginary part of x(t) as a function of t.

(d)  Plot by hand the absolute value of x(t) as a function of t.

(e)  Plot by hand the odd part of x(t).

B)    For each of the following complex numbers determine its magnitude and angle (also

known as phase):

(a)  1+j

(b)  1-j

(c)  0.5 + j√3/2

(d)  0.5 − j√3/2 (e) -2.0

Problem 1.2

A)   Calculate the CTFT of each of the following signals using X (j) = ; x(t)e9(:, dt and plot by hand |X (j)| as a function of 业.

a)   x(t) = 6 (t − 3), where 6 (t) is the continuous-time unit impulse.

b)   x(t) = 6 (t + 3)

c)    x(t) = u(t + 1) − u(t − 1) , where u(t) is the continuous-time unit step.

d)   x(t) = u(t) − u(t − 2)

B)   For each CTFT given below, compute the corresponding signal using x(t) =  ; X(j)e(:, d and plot by hand |x(t)| as a function of t.

(a) X(j) = 2冗6(业 − 100冗)

(b) X(j业) = u(业 + 冗) − u(业 − 冗)

Problem 1.3

a)   Determine the differential equation that relates the input voltage signal (x(t)) and the output voltage signal (y(t)) of an analog circuit such that

X(j)

Y (j业) =

HINT: Use x(t) =  ; X(j)e(:, d to determine how the CTFT of  y(t) is related to the CTFT of y(t)). This problem illustrates how the desired relationship between the  CTFT of the input signal and the CTFT of the output signal can be implemented through   the actions of an analog circuit (which may be viewed as a practical continuous-time        algorithm for transforming input voltage signals into output voltage signals).

b)   If x(t) is a real-valued signal with X(j1000几) = 1 + j, use X(j) = 9;(;) x(t)e9(:, dt to determine the value of X (−j1000几). This result shows that any algorithm for          determining the CTFT of a real-valued signal need not directly calculate the CTFT for    negative frequencies.

Problem 1.4

a)   What advantages does digital signal processing offer over analog signal processing? Write at least a couple of sentences.

b)   What are the disadvantages of digital signal processing with respect to analog signal processing? Write at least a couple of sentences.

Problem 1.5

Use MATLAB (or another software package) to p roduce a stem plot for each of the following discrete-time signals when the independent variable is in the range −20 ≤ n ≤ 20:

a)   x[n] = u[n] − u[n − 10]

b)   g[n] = (0.5)O cos(0.25几n) u[n]

c)   q[n] =

In each of the above signal formulas, u[n] represents the discrete-time unit step.
