CVEN9702: PROJECT PLANNING AND CONTROL
Part A – Answer in a Separate Booklet
Question 1 (25 marks)
(a) Draw a precedence diagram for the project for which data is given in the
following table.

(b) For each activity of the project described in (a) determine the EST, LST, EFT,
LFT, FF and TF. These answers should be written in boxes drawn in
appropriate places on your precedence diagram.
(c) What is the critical path in this project?
(d) Is the link between activities B and F a redundant link? Why or why not? (Answer in 2 lines or less).
Question 2 (25 marks)
(a) PERT and PNET both assume that the probability distributions describing the activity
times approximate a Beta distribution. However, these two scheduling methods then assume that the probability distributions describing the path lengths in the project approximate a normal distribution. Why is the normality assumption justified? Under what circumstances would the normality assumption be invalid? (Answer in four lines or less.)
(b) Draw an arrow diagram for the project whose activities are summarised in the following
table:

Graph paper has been provided for your answers to this question.
(a) Construct a resource profile for engineers assuming that all activities start at their
earliest start times. Mark the maximum resource usage on your profile.
(b) Assuming that you only have 5 engineers available, reschedule the activities to fit the
resource limitations. In doing this, arrange your schedule to have minimal impact on the project duration and minimise "hirings" and "firings" as much as possible. Mark the project duration on your profile.
Question 4 (25 marks)
Question 4 should be answered in a different answer book to Questions 1 and 2.
(a) Give two reasons why planning should always proceed from the general to the detailed.
(Answer in 4 lines or less) (4 marks)
(b) Give two reasons why planning carried out at the beginning of a project is more
beneficial than planning carried out towards the end of a project. (Answer in 4 lines or less) (4 marks)
(c) What levels of detail are required in the programs prepared for each of the following: senior managers, middle management, and production management? (Answer in 6 lines or less). (6 marks)
(d) What is the problem with creating a plan that is too detailed at tender time? (Answer in
2 lines or less). (2 marks)
(e) What is the problem with creating a plan that does not have enough detail at tender
time? (Answer in 2 lines or less). (2 marks)
(f) When dividing work into activities, what are the three characteristics that activities
should have? In this question “activities” represent the lowest level of the work breakdown structure. (Answer in 3 lines or less). (3 marks)
(g) In regard to project scheduling, what is a milestone, and why are milestones important
in project control? (Answer in 4 lines or less). (4 marks)
