ACC/ACF3100 MID-SEMESTER TEST
(FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)
The mid-semester test (MST) in ACF/ACC3100 is scheduled to be held in Week 7 at 2.00 pm on 6 September, Tuesday (AEST, Melbourne time). The test will be delivered online and will be accessible via your ACC/ACF3100 Moodle site. You will need to use an electronic device for this purpose. The test will comprise two [2] short answer questions and eighteen [18] multiple-choice questions (twenty [20] questions in total). This MST contributes towards 15% of your final grade in the unit. The test can only be undertaken during the designated time stated above. Failure to undertake the MST at the scheduled time will result in you receiving a grade of 0 for this assessment component in the unit.
How long is the ACC/ACF3100 Mid-Semester Test (MST)?
TEST DURATION: 90 minutes (inclusive of reading time).
How do I access the ACC/ACF3100 MST?
You are required to access the test in a folder on the ACC/ACF3100 Moodle site labeled “Mid- semester Test (Quiz) - 6 September (Tuesday) from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm, Melbourne time”
What if I encounter technical issues while taking the MST?
Please immediately contact the Chief Examiner of the unit concerned via:
jongwon.park@monash.edu
What should I have ready before I log in to complete the MST?
Before you log in, have some blank paper, pen and/or two/three lead pencils and a calculator ready. You will only have 90 minutes in which to complete this test (inclusive of reading time).
Is the ACC/ACF3100 MST open book?
Yes, the MST in ACC/ACF3100 is open book.
What does “Open book” mean?
Open book refers to the materials you will be allowed to access during the test. This includes all the unit materials on Moodle (including the PV tables), the prescribed and recommended textbooks for the unit, and the relevant prescribed article. It does not include third party sources from the internet. Students must complete the test on their own and write everything in their own words (the exception is journal entry account names which can match the unit materials). The use of a third party tutoring service is not permitted.
What is the structure of the ACC/ACF3100 MST?
Eighteen [18] Multiple Choice Questions: one mark each (18 marks)
Two [2] short-answer questions (problems): (12 marks)
Total marks: 30
You must answer all questions.
The format of the two [2] short-answer questions is similar to the types of questions we do in tutorials. These problems may consist of conceptual-type questions and technical questions that require journal entries to be prepared.
For conceptual-type short-answer questions (problems): You will be required to type
out your answers directly into the answer box provided .
For technical-type short-answer questions (problems) that require journal entries: You
have the option to either type out your answer directly into the answer box OR complete your answer in a Word document and upload it.
o When writing journal entries directly into the answer box, it is not necessary to align the debit and credit columns if you place a ‘Dr’ before the account names that are being debited and a ‘Cr’ before the account names being credited.
o If you choose the upload option, open up a blank Word document and complete your answer there. To upload your document, scroll down to the bottom of the question page and click ‘Add’ directly above the word ‘Files’ . Also, when using the upload option, please do not include answers to any other questions in the document. Accepted file types are a Word 2007 document (.docx) or a Word document (.doc).
o Please plan ahead using the practice test as a guide to decide whether you would answer this type of question in the answer box or by providing your answer in an attachment.
Copying and pasting answers from Word/Excel into the answer boxes may create
formatting issues. If you attempt this, please experiment with the practice test problems to ensure that the end result in the answer box is fully understandable.
What do I need to study?
The test covers the following topics:
The Australian Accounting Environment (Lecture Week 1; Tutorials Weeks 1 & 2) Theories of Financial Accounting (Lecture Week 2; Tutorial Week 3) Extractive Industries (Lecture Week 3; Tutorial Week 4)
Intangible Assets (Lecture Week 4; Tutorial Week 5)
Ensure you review the following when preparing for the test:
Lecture notes and all illustrations provided;
Tutorial questions/solutions;
Relevant chapters in the textbook;
The Practice MST on Moodle
Will I be provided with practice material before the test?
A Practice MST will be available in Moodle. The quiz will be available on Monday 29 August at 9:00 AM and will close on Tuesday 6 September at 12:00 PM .
This should be helpful to practice some MCQ's and to become familiar with the general
format of the MST.
For short-answer questions (problems), please use the practice test to explore the
functionality of the answer boxes and the attachment function for technical problems.
Please also note:
While the Practice MST contains fourteen [14] MCQ’s and two [2] short answer
problems, the actual MST will contain eighteen [18] MCQ’s and two [2] Problems.
While the Practice MST is open for several days and has no time limit, you must start
your actual MST at the scheduled start time and complete it within 90 minutes.
While the Practice MST allows unlimited attempts, the actual MST only allows one
attempt .
After attempting the Practice MST, you should be able to see the correct answers for
the MCQ’s. For the actual MST, the correct answers for the MCQ’s will not be available until after all the marking has been completed.
What calculator should I use for the ACC/ACF3100 MST?
You are permitted to use any calculator.
Is there a hurdle requirement for ACC/ACF3100 MST?
No! The purpose of the test is to provide you with feedback as to how you are progressing in the unit. The MST intends to identify what you know and, more importantly, what you do not know so that you can address the latter specifically before the final exam.
What if I am sick on the day of the MST?
Students enrolled at an Australian campus (including those who will be sitting the test from an overseas location) must use the online system to apply for special consideration (refer to the following link for details of how to apply).
Please note that special consideration may be granted but is not guaranteed. Take careful note of the specific grounds upon which special consideration may be granted.
What if I have a clash between the ACC/ACF3100 MST and classes in another unit?
If your timetabled test (please refer to the Exam timetable tile via my.monash portal) clashes with a lecture or seminar in another unit then you will be required to view the recording for the other units lecture or seminar via learning capture. If you have a clash with a different class activity, please contact the unit coordinator of the affected class to make an alternative arrangement. Neither of the above circumstances will constitute reasonable grounds for special consideration. Your MST takes precedence over other activities during this designated MST period.
What if I have work commitments that clash with ACC/ACF3100 MST?
Outside work commitments are not sufficient grounds for special consideration . If you do have outside work commitments, you will be required to make arrangements as early as possible so that you can attend your timetabled MST, as you would have been given early notice of the scheduled MST.
There are many different circumstances, which may give rise to a special consideration application. Such as:
● short-term serious medical condition. This includes hospital admission, serious injury, severe asthma, and severe anxiety or depression.
● loss or bereavement (for example, death of a close family member).
● family relationship breakdown .
● hardship or trauma. This may include: victims of crime; sudden loss of income or employment; or severe disruption to domestic arrangements.
● obligations to military, jury or emergency services (such as the Country Fire Authority).
● for students registered with the Elite Student Performer Scheme for student athletes, artists, performers participating in a key event and for students competing in key academic events and programs representing the University.
● for student carers, where acute illness or other exceptional cause affects the person for whom they care and impacts the student’s ability to prepare for or perform the assessment .
I bring to your attention that special consideration will not be granted for:
● Managing workload from other units of study;
● Managing work commitments;
● Managing activities arising from voluntary representation as a member of a club or society;
● Misreading the examination timetable; or
● Information and communications technology- related problems, except where they could not have been prevented, avoided or the effects minimised by reasonable diligence by students.
When do I get my grade?
Your grade (out of 30) will be available on Moodle in teaching Week 9.
What feedback will I receive?
The MST solutions will be reviewed in your tutorial during teaching Week 8 or 9. Tutors will be working through the MST test solutions.
