Facet of Mathematics: Technical report
For the Facets of Mathematics technical report you will work individually on a topic from either the Image Processing or the Cubic Curves theme.
You should investigate your report topic, starting with the given topic description or starting point references, but also reading around the subject.
Guidance
● The report must be a maximum of 3 pages, excluding figures, figure captions, tables, table captions, code, and the bibliography.
● Figures, tables, code and the bibliography should appear at the end of the report.
● If you perform calculations in Python then the code must be included at the end of your report. This does not count towards the page limit, and need not be referred to in the text (although you may choose to).
● The report must be produced in LATEX. You should use the provided file tech report template .tex as a starting point.
● The report should be written in an appropriate technical style. In particular, avoid being too conversational, and avoid use of the first person “I” .
● This is an individual report, and the report must reflect your own work and understanding.
Template
You should use the provided file tech report template .tex as a starting point for your report.
Use of references
It is important in academic writing to make use of appropriate references. These will typically consist of appropriate textbooks and articles. You may also include references to other materials, such as lecture notes or websites, although more reliable sources are usually preferable. These should appear in the bibliography and be cited using the /cite command or similar.
Bibliography items should include at least
● For journal articles: The author(s), title, journal, volume, issue or number (if defined), page range (if defined), and year.
● For textbooks: The author(s), title, publisher, and year.
● For websites: The web address, and an access date.
Can I use Wikipedia?
Generally references to Wikipedia pages should be avoided – for a good discussion see1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Academic use. Wikipedia can be a good place to start if you are new to a topic, but it is better to find more reliable sources on the topic if possible.
