ECO220 EMPIRICAL ASSIGNMENT 2

2022

Objective:  For the  second  empirical  assignment, you  are to  conduct your own study  using  a  linear regression model. You may also use other graphs/charts/techniques discussed in the lectures to help the reader (marker) understand the story you are trying to tell with a dataset.

Instructions:

•   The word limit is 1000 for this assignment. This is about 4 pages double spaced in a reasonably sized font.

•   The word limit does not include the output, graphs and tables that you may include in your analysis.

•    Submit your essay and code on Quercus. If you used an external dataset, submit the csv/excel file as well.

•    I strongly recommend that you use a data set from the wooldridge package in R.

•    You may also use or gather your own data set, but this is not necessary or recommended at all.

General Outline:

Introduction

•    What is your research question?

Data/Model

•    Which variables will you include in your regression? Why?

•    What data will you be using to measure those variables?

•    What assumptions will you be making for your model?

Analysis

•    What are the results of your model?

•    How do the results answer your research question?

Conclusion/Reflection

•    Was it what you expected? If not, why do you think this is the case?

•    Are there potential areas where your results could be biased?

Advice/Things to Know:

•    You will find the documentationin this linkuseful in determining which dataset you want to use from the wooldridge package.

•    Note, not every dataset in the package can be run using a linear regression. For example, there are special considerations you have to make when working with time series, so you may want to avoid those data sets.

•    Getting your own data and forming your own research question is a very difficult task; it is also time consuming. The purpose of me recommending the wooldridge datasets is to lighten the burden of having to come up with a research question from scratch.

Research Question [5 marks]

•    Does your research question make sense?

•    Have convinced your reader that your question is important?

Empirical Strategy [25 marks]

•    Did you successfully translate your research question into a model?

•    Is it clear to the reader why and how you selected your model?

•    Are the variables you included relevant to your research question?

•    Are you drawing the right conclusions from the model?

•    Is the evidence and analysis that you are conducting relevant to your research question?

•    Have you utilized your econometric toolbox sufficiently in answering the research question?

Statistical Aptitude [10 marks]

•    Is your model statistically sound?

•    Are the assumptions in your model clear?

•    Are the assumptions you made appropriate for the data?

•    Have you addressed and discussed any weaknesses in your model?

Coherence [10 marks]

•    Does your essay flow logically or is it all over the place?

•    Do you have errors everywhere and incomplete sentences?

•    Did you cite any sources that you used to complete the essay?
