MATH1400: Modelling with differential equations (Spring 2022)

Examples 2

Note: In all cases, use the appropriate method to find the general solution in the case where a bound- ary condition is not given, or the particular solution in the case when a boundary condition is given. If possible, write the solution y(x) as an explicit function of x.

Section 1: to be covered in tutorials. The solutions to some of these examples are given on the other side of this page.

1.  Show that the following ODEs are of homogeneous degree, in some cases following suitable rearrangement. Solve the ODEs.

(a)  y\  = y  + 1.

(b)  xy\  = 3x + 4y.

(c)  (x + y)y\  = x  y.

(e)  2xyy\  = x2 + 2y2 .

(f)  x(x + y)y\  = y(x y).

(g)  xyy\  = y2 + x ^4x2 + y2 .

2.  Test, using a suitable condition, whether the following ODEs are exact. In case (c), determine an appropriate integrating factor dependent on x only. Solve the ODEs.

(a)  x2 (x + 2y3 )y\ + xy(3x + y3 ) = 0. (b)  xy\ siny − cosy = 2x.

3.  Solve the following first-order linear ODEs.

(a)  y\  = y  + 1.

(b)  y\  xy = x.

(c)  y\ + y cosx = exp(sinx).

(c)  x2y\ cosy + xsiny + 1 = 0

(d)  y\ + y tan x = cos2 x.

(e)  y\ − y tanx = 1,     with y(π/4) = 3. (f)  xy\ − 2y = x2 ,         with y(1) = 1.

4.  Show that the following ODEs are of the form of Bernoulli’s equation, or can be put into that form. Solve the ODEs.

(a)  y\ +北(1)y = x2y2 .

(b)  y\  y = ^y .

(c)  x2 y\ + 2xy = 5y4 .

(d)  y2y\ + 3xy3  = 6x.

(e)  y\  = y + y3 .

(f)  y2 (xy\ + y) = (1 + x3 )  .

Section 2: to be handed in.

Note approximately 20% of marks are awarded for clarity and presentation. To gain these marks, show your working, structure your answers clearly and logically, and give appropriate explanations using sentences as well as equations.

1.  Show that the following ODE is of homogeneous degree. Hence solve it subject to the given boundary condition.

x2y\  = y(x + y),    with    y(1) = 1.

2.  Show, using an appropriate test, that the following ODE is exact. Solve the ODE. (xey − x  cosy + 2)y2\ + yey − 2xsiny = 0.

3.  Determine an integrating factor, dependent only on y, that makes the following ODE exact. Hence solve the ODE.

2y + (x + 3y)y\  = 0.

4.  Solve the following first-order linear ODE:

y\ + y = 4x.

5.  Verify that the following is a Bernoulli equation and find its general solution: x3   − x2  = −y3 cos x.

6.  Use any appropriate solution techniques to solve the following first-order ODEs.

(a)  (xcosy) y\ + siny = 0.

(b)  y\ + 2y tanx = sinx,      with y() = 0.

(c)  yy\ + xy2  = exp( x2 ).
