SCENARIO
Background
Travelling has become an important part of modern life. Millions of people all over the world travel in their own countries and to foreign lands for pleasure, business or both. However, Covid-19 brought travel plans for many to a halt in 2020. The rapid surge in the number of Covid infections sent countries scurrying to impose travel bans and/or restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. However, rising rates of vaccination, combined with easing of travel restrictions due to increased cross-border coordination and protocols have renewed people’s interest in travelling once again. Like Singapore, many countries have lifted international travel bans and eased travel curbs in an effort to live with Covid-19. As such, more people have taken to travelling overseas and their numbers are expected to rise in the coming months.
.
Assume you are working for a travel association in your country. The association is made up of travel agencies that promote and organize tours for locals to foreign destinations. The Chairperson, Ms X of the association is interested to find out the perception of locals about travelling overseas for pleasure. The Chairperson has commissioned you to investigate the following and draft a report:
• How interested are they in travelling overseas for holidays?
• Whom do they usually travel with?
• What are their reasons to travel overseas for holidays?
• Who decides on their travel itinerary/travel schedule? (self-made, prepared by travel agency etc.)
• How do they usually choose a holiday destination? (Websites, recommended in social media etc.)
• What are the factors that are important to them when deciding on a holiday destination?
• What types of activities do they engage in while on holiday overseas?
• What would be an ideal duration for a holiday overseas?
• In which month/s do they usually go for holiday overseas?
• How do they usually book their overseas holiday trips? (Travel agents, travel websites etc.)
• What are their views on niche tourism*?
• Other relevant questions.
*Niche tourism can be defined as ‘an umbrella tourism form, which identifies macro and micro tourism segments appealing to a specific group of travellers’ .
