Mathematics III (Probability Theory)

Assignment 3

1.  [30 points] If X is a normal random variable with mean E[X] = µ and variance Var(X) = σ 2 ,

(a)  [20 points] Show expressions of E[X2] and E[X3] .

(b)  [10 points] If R and T are two independent normal random variables such that E[R] =

E[T] = 2µ and Var(R) = Var(T) = σ 2 , compute

E[(R + T)3].

2.  [25 points] The joint pdf of two random variables X and Y is given by

e x/y e y

y

(a)  [10 points] Compute fX|Y (x|y), the conditional pdf of X given Y = y . (b)  [15 points] Compute E[X2|Y = y].

3.  [35  points] A prisoner is trapped in a cell containing 4 doors.  The rst door leads to a tunnel that returns him to his cell after 2 days’ travel.  The second leads to a tunnel that returns him to his cell after 4 days’ travel.  The third door leads to freedom after 1 day of travel. The fourth leads to a tunnel that returns him to his cell after 5 days’ travel. Assume that the prisoner selects doors with equal probability,

(a)  [15 points] what is the expected number of days until the prisoner reaches freedom?

(b)  [20 points] what is the expected number of days that the prisoner could have saved

to reach freedom, if he marked the door that he has chosen and thus never chooses the same door twice?

4.  [10 points] The number of televisions sold daily at a certain store is a random variable X with expected value E[X] = 10.

(a)  [5 points] Find an upper bound (strictly smaller than 1) to the probability that next

day’s sales are at least 20.

(b)  [5 points] Assuming that Var[X] = 5, find a lower bound (strictly larger than 0) to the

probability that next day’s sales are between 5 and 15.
