Assignment 2 (30%)

The company Aros Invest A/S is an investment company that advises both private individuals and businesses regarding  investment and asset  management. The company’s  head office  is  located on a  leased  land in Aarhus since the foundation in 1985.

The  company  has just  held  a  strategy  seminar  and  in this  connection, the  board  and the  owners  have discussed the possibility of replacing the company’s large steel sculpture at the company’s car park near the main entrance with  a wind turbine, which will ensure the company’s  energy consumption and signal  a greener focus in the company. The CFO of the company has been asked to calculate the consequences, and your task is to assist the CFO with the following questions (all amounts are in DKK thousands):

The specific wind turbine is available from Vestas Wind Systems A/S, which has just announced smaller wind turbines for businesses. The selling price for this turbine amounts to DKK 2,700, but the company can obtain a discount of DKK 100 if the turbine is purchased before April 2022.

Costs for casting the foundation and setting up of the mill amount to DKK 850, if the contractor can get the steel sculpture in exchange. The old steel sculpture, which was acquired in 1990, was fully depreciated in the annual accounts and the tax accounts but was recently valued at DKK 20 by independent appraisers. Shipping of the turbine, which is paid for by the buyer, amounts to DKK 15.

Costs for the electrician, who can connect the turbine to the electricity grid, amount to 115. Costs regarding service agreement, which covers annual service at the turbine in the first year, amount to DKK 65 and is paid in 2022.

Assume that the company enters a contract for the purchase of the turbine before April 2022, and that the turbine can be delivered and is ready for use in the beginning of January 2022. The useful life of the turbine is stated to be 25 years, and Aros Invest depreciates operating equipment on a straight-line basis in the company’s annual accounts.

Question 2.1

Please prepare a statement showing the consequences of the purchase of the turbine in the first 5 years of the turbine’s lifetime before tax. Assume that there are no other than the mentioned conditions to be taken into consideration.

Please prepare a statement showing the consequences of the purchase of the turbine in the first 5 years of the turbine’s lifetime after tax, including explaining whether it is a deferred tax asset or a deferred tax liability at the end of year 3 during the turbine’s lifetime (end of 2024).

Question 2.3

Assume that the turbine at the beginning of 2026 (year 5 of the turbine) is revalued by 20% of the book value due to rising energy prices on the market. How is the accounting treatment of this revaluation, and what significance will it have for the annual depreciation (in 2026 and onwards)?

Question 2.4

In connection with the construction of the turbine, Aros Invest has contacted the company’s landlord. The company’s landlord likes the idea very much and agrees that the lease is non-cancellable by the landlord for the entire life of the turbine, but in return, it is written in the lease that Aros Invest is obliged to re-establish the area where the turbine is placed after use. The contractor estimates that the cost of re-establishing the area will amount to DKK 250.
