The Village Resort

The Village is a 300-room luxury seaside resort in Italy. It has for many years maintained the reputation of providing not only deluxe accommodations but superior service from both          management and staff. The majority of the employees lives close by and belong to the baby   boomer generation. These employees felt that they had been well taken care of over the years, and loyalty to the organisation was very high. As a result, turnover has historically been very low, especially compared with the industry averages.

In the last several years many of these long-time employees have begun to retire. The labour  pool in the small town has diminished over the years as more and more people have moved to the larger cities to seek employment. As a result, retiring employees have been replaced by    young men and women from the surrounding area, who often have to travel several miles to   get to work.

In the past few years the quality of service at the Village has severely deteriorated, although the building continued to be well cared and the quality of food, linens, entertainment, and    other amenities has been maintained. The resort is beginning to lose some of its long-time   repeat customers, and the reputation of The Village is felt to be threatened.

The General Manager had met with his executive staff, who believe that control systems are breaking down and supervisory personnel need to be strict over low-level employees. The   more senior employees seem to believe that the younger workers are irresponsible and lazy  and resist authority. The newer employees believe that they have some ideas that might help the resort, but that no one listens to their opinions.

The General Manager was hired nine months ago to replace the former manager, who retired after being in the property for 11 years. The owners had hoped that the new manager would   be able to turn the situation around, but they had seen little progress for most part of the year.

The owners are planning a meeting with the General Manager and his staff to get a course of action for the resort to be steered in the right direction.

INSTRUCTIONS: Discuss the following questions in your own words. Take note that ‘rewards and recognition’, is not only in financial terms.

1. Describe what has happened to The Village Resort?

2.  Research and describe the baby boomer generation and their work ethic. Provide the strengths and weaknesses.

3. Research and describe the next two generations - X and Y, after baby boomers, and their work ethics.

4. Discuss where should the General Manager focus his attention? Identify FOUR main areas that needs attention.

5. Develop at least SIX Action Plans to assist the General Manager to steer the hotel in the right direction. The action plans should consider the needs of all the generations and what it takes to get back to the hotel’s former glory. Number your action plans.
