Part one

You can provide hand-written solutions for this part, but it is not necessary. You are welcome to try to write

your solutions with R markdown.

1.  Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is a uorochrome mitochondrial dye with potential use for cancer treatment. One of the objectives of a study was to show that the administration of R6G during a period of hypoglycemia reduces the growth rate of the Walker 256 tumor.  A group of n1  = 7 rats underwent implantation of 100 mg of viable fragments of Walker 256 carcinosarcoma, and after 48 hours prior to the drug administation and 8 hours after.  After a week, the tumors were weighted yielding a sample mean of y¯1  = 3.6g and a sample standard deviation of s1  = 0.3g. A control group of n2  = 7 rats which received the same tumor transplant had a sample mean of y¯2  = 7.1g and a sample standard deviation of s2  = 0.7g. This study was implemented as a completely randomized design.

(a)  Test for the treatment effects on the mass of the tumor at α = 5.  Assume that the two populations are normally distributed with unequal variances.

(b)  Give a 95% for the difference in the mean size of the tumor a week after implantation for the treatment group and the control group. Based on this interval, can we conclude that the administration of R6G reduces the tumor growth rate?

2.  An article in Electronic Components and Technology Conference (Vol 52, 2001, pp. 1167-1171) describes

a study comparing single versus spindle saw processes for copper metallized wafers. A total of 15 devices

of each type were measured for the width of the backside chips: single = 66.385, ssingle = 7.895, and

(a)  Do these data support the claim that both processes have the same chip outputs on average? Assume that both populations are normally distribution and have the same variance. Give the observed value of the test statistic, the p-value, and the conclusion.

(b)  Give a 95% condence interval on the mean dierence in spindle saw processes.

Part Two

Please R for all computations, and for building graphs in this part of the assignment.  Note that we also want answers to some of this questions, that do not involve R. R will only be used for the computation, and to produce graphs.  For some of these questions, the R output will not be sufficient.  You will need to interpret, to describe, and give conclusions.

3.  Compute the following probabilities:

a.  P (T > 1.45), where T ~ T (6).

b.  P (T < 0.55), where T ~ T (10).

c.  P (T < _2.45), where T ~ T (50).

d.  P (T > _1.25), where T ~ T (100).

e.  2 P(T > | _ 1.25|), where T ~ T (75).

4.  Front housings for cell phones are manufactured in an injection molding process.  The time the part is allowed to cool in the mold before removal is thought to influence the occurrence of a particularly troublesome cosmetic defect, flow lines, in the nished housing.  After manufacturing, the housings are inspected visually and assigned a score between  1 and  10 based on their appearance, with  10 correspondingto a perfect part and 1 corresponding to a completely defective part. An experiment was conducted using two cool-down times, 10 and 20 seconds, and 20 housing were evaluated at each level of cool-down time.  All 40 observations in this experiment were run in a random order.  The data are in the le CellPhones .csv.

(a)  Give  comparative  boxplots  and  overlayed  normal  probability plots  for these  data.   Do these  plots

provide support of the assumptions of normality and equal variances? Write a practical interpretation for these plots.

(b)  Is there evidence to support the claim that the longer cool-down time results in fewer appearance

defects? Use α = 5%.

(c)  Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the difference in means.  Provide a practical interpretation of this interval.

5.  An article in IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compability (Vol 2, 2002) describes the quantification of the absorption of electromagnetic energy and the resulting thermal effect from cellular phones. The experimental results were obtained from in vivo experiments conducted on rats. The arterial blood pressure values (mmHg) for the control group (8 rats) and for treatment group (8 rats) were saved in the le BloodPressure .csv.

(a)  Give comparative boxplots and overlayed normal probability plots for test samples.  Do these plots

provide support of the assumptions of normality and equal variances? Write a practical interpretation for these plots.

(b)  Test for the signicance of the treatment eects. Give your conclusion at a level of signicance of 5%.

Assume that both populations are normal with unequal variances.

(c)  Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the difference between the mean blood pressure of the control group and the mean blood pressure of the treatment group. Based on the confidence interval is there evidence to support the claim that the treatment group has higher mean blood pressure?
