SOC00011M: Advanced Methods in Social Research

Spring Term 2022

ASSESSMENT

You should complete ONE quantitative methods exercise (Part A) and ONE qualitative methods exercise (Part B). You should submit 2500 words maximum for each exercise. Your assessment for this module is comprised of a total of 5000 words maximum. This does not include data extracts and appendices.

Please clearly indicate which exercises you have completed and submit separate files for Part A and Part B.

PART A: QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS

QUANTITATIVE OPTION A: ADVANCED REGRESSION MODELS (2500 WORDS TOTAL)

Data Analysis Report:

Formulate a research question that can be analysed using data from the ‘Understanding Society’ teaching data set (SN7549). You should:

· Select one dependent variable and three independent variables of your choice. Identify the appropriate regression model for fitting the data (i.e. linear, logistic, multinomial, etc.). Estimate two models:

o The first model should include all three independent variables

o The second model should include the same independent variables, including an interaction term between two of the independent variables.

- Your report should:

o Describe the data set, variables and method chosen

o Present, discuss and interpret the two regression models

Note:

· This is not a research report, you do not need to introduce the substantive topic or include a literature review.

· You do not have to show univariate or bivariate statistics.

· You should include your Stata code (i.e. the contents of your .do file) as an appendix. This will not be included in the word limit.

QUANTITATIVE OPTION B: LONGITUDINAL DATA ANALYSIS (2500 WORDS TOTAL)

Research Proposal: Design a piece of quantitative longitudinal research to address a social science research question of your choice.

Your proposal should include:

1. An introduction to your chosen topic and research question.

2. A description of the design of your study.

· Will you use an existing data resource? If so, please describe it.

· Will you collect new data? If so, please describe the data you will collect.

· Which longitudinal data analysis technique will you use? Why?

3. A discussion of the value which quantitative longitudinal data analysis will bring to this research.

PART B: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS

QUALITATIVE OPTION A: GRAPHIC ELICITATION (2500 WORDS TOTAL)

Critically discuss the use of ‘graphic elicitation’ in qualitative social science research.

QUALITATIVE OPTION B: DECOLONISING METHODOLOGIES (2500 WORDS TOTAL)

Critically assess how social research methodologies can be decolonised. Your answer should refer to at least one of the following areas: (i) epistemology and the colonial episteme; (ii) research ethics and questions of informed consent; and/or (iii) academic extractivism.

QUALITATIVE OPTION C: COMPARATIVE HISTORICAL ANALYSIS (2500 WORDS TOTAL)

Choose one research study that used historical comparative method, and complete the following:

- Provide a brief outline of the study.

- Provide a description and critical analysis of how comparative historical analysis has been used.

- Focusing on case selection, (a) outline the rationale provided by the researcher for their choice of case studies and (b) critically analyse their case study selection.
