Econ 15A

Probability and Statistics for Economics I

Summer 2022

Course Description: This course is an introduction to probability, statistics, and  econometrics.  We  will  discuss  methods  for  describing  sets  of  data, probability,  random  variables   and  probability  distributions.  This   course provides important foundational material for the exciting regression techniques you’ll learn in Econ 15B!

Prerequisites: Math 2A, Math 2B

Important Dates:

Exams: Midterm – 7/14 (Thursday), Final – 7/26 (Tuesday)

Grades: Course grades will be determined by homework (25%), a midterm (35%), and a final exam (40%).

Homework  (25%) – There are five online problem sets for the course. Please  refer  to  the  Course  Schedule  (below)  for  i)  chapters  included  in  a

homework  set  and  ii)  due  dates.  Problem  sets  are  accessible  in  MyLab (directions shared Week 1). Homework is (mostly) due Sundays at 11pm PT (due dates below Course Schedule; exceptions: HW#1 due Sunday 7/3 by 7pm and HW#5 due last day of class, Wednesday 7/27 by 11pm). HW#1 (covering Chapters 2-4) will have a unique homework link for each chapter in MyLab. All chapters from a homework set are due on Sunday at 11pm (exceptions: HW#1 and HW#5). No late work will be accepted. Please note: although problem sets are assigned” during a particular week, access and start earlier. MyLab permits multiple attempts per problem and keeps the best score.

MyLab homework assignments are not overly difficult and are meant to help you identify the areas you’re struggling with. Even though this work is graded, you are encouraged to work together if you find it beneficial to do so. Each student, however, will submit their own copy in MyLab.

Exams (Midterm: 35%, Final: 40%) – Two exams (1 midterm, 1 final) with free-response questions comprise the bulk of your course grade. Exams are 90- 120 minutes and will be available in Canvas on the exam day between 9am- 11:30am (see Course Schedule below or Important Dates above). Please plan now to accommodate the exam date/time in your calendar. Reading the book and   reviewing   lecture   slides/examples,   attending   sections   (and   asking questions!), completing all assigned homework, reviewing solutions for course problems, and forming study groups will help you thrive in this course. There will  be  no  make-up  exams.  If  you  miss  a  midterm  with  an  exceptional documentable excuse (medical emergency or death in the family), the weight of that exam may be added to the final exam provided official documentation of the incident is supplied. If you miss the final exam, you will need to file for an Incomplete  in  the  course.  Letter  grades  are  determined  according  to  the following traditional scale: a weighted-average score of 94% is needed for an A, 90% A-, 87% B+, 84% B, 80% B-, etc.

The final course grade may be curved at my discretion. This may be done only after the final exam is complete to adjust for the course difficulty.

Participation/Attendance – While attendance is not formally taken in our course  and  participation  will  not  directly  factor  into  your  course  grade, reviewing all lecture materials  and  joining  (online  +  section)  discussions is beneficial for your own understanding of the material, helps your peers, and maintains a lively atmosphere. Regular participation (asking insightful questions in office hours and forums; offering helpful solutions to online problems and discussion) is a valuable public good we all contribute to and benefit from.

Discussion  Sections –  While  attendance  is  not  mandatory,  it’s  strongly recommended  you  attend  sections  to  do well  in  the  course. You’ll  review important lecture concepts and prep for homework/exams.

Grade Appeals If you believe a mistake was made in grading your exam, submit a  formal written appeal  (identifying issues and evidence) within one week after an exam is returned. Attach the exam to a hand-written appeal. A comprehensive exam review may modify your score upward or downward.

E-mail: Frequent course announcements will be sent from Canvas to your UCI email address. Please be aware that the University has a spam filter that may  screen  out  email  sent  from  third-party  email  providers  (e.g.,  Google, Yahoo), therefore it is best to use your accredited university email account to avoid any issues. I will respond to all administrative inquiries within 48 hours. Any questions regarding course material (lecture, problem sets, etc .) should be posted  to  the  discussion  forums  to  ensure  a  timely  response  and  for  all classmates to benefit from the discussion. If sending an email, you MUST include Econ 15A in the subject line.

Discussion  Forums:  We  will  be  relying  heavily  on  the  Canvas  website throughout the quarter. All course materials including syllabi, lectures slides, and exams will only be made available through the Canvas website. In addition, use  of  the  discussion  forums  is  strongly  encouraged  to  ask  and  answer questions (see above section on Participation). If you have a question about the material, it is likely others have the same question so discussing issues in this public forum will benefit all.
