Mid-year Examinations, 2021

1.   A 1 m3 rigid tank contains a liquid-vapour mixture of water at 200 °C. 20 % of the volume of the tank contains water in its liquid form, whereas the remaining 80 % contains water in its vapour form. Determine the following:

(a)  The pressure within the tank.

(2 marks)

(b)  The specific volume of the liquid water and the specific volume of the water vapour

within the tank.

(c)  The mass of the liquid water and the mass of the water vapour within the tank.

(4 marks)

(d)  The quality of the liquid-vapour mixture within the tank.                                 (2 marks)

2.   A piston-cylinder device contains 0.1 kg of air at 300 K and 100 kPa (this is the initial state).

90 kJ of heat energy is then transferred to the air in the piston-cylinder device, causing the air to expand in a constant pressure process until the volume of the air at the end of the process is 8 times the initial volume. Calculate the following:

(a)  The volume of the air in the piston cylinder device at the initial state.             (2 marks)

(b)  The boundary work output done by the air during the expansion process.     (3 marks)

(c)  The change in internal energy of the air caused by the expansion process.     (2 marks)

(d)  The temperature of the air at the final state. You may assume that the specific heats of the air are constant and equal to their values at 500 K.                              (3 marks)

3.   A proposed heat pump design produces a heating effect of 18 kW whilst using 6 kW of  electrical power. The thermal energy reservoirs that the heat pump exchanges heat with are at 27 °C and -3 °C. Assume that the thermal energy reservoirs undergo an internally reversible process during the heat transfer to/from the heat pump.

(a) Calculate the coefficient of performance of the heat pump.                            (2 marks)

(b) Calculate the rate of heat transfer from the low temperature thermal reservoir to the

(2 marks)

(c) Calculate the coefficient of performance of a reversible heat pump operating between the two thermal energy reservoirs and comment on whether the proposed heat pump

(4 marks)

4.   A steady flow of air enters a compressor at 250 K and 100 kPa and is compressed in a reversible and adiabatic process to a pressure of 394.6 kPa. Calculate the power input per unit mass flowrate of air by the compressor. Assume variable specific heats.

(6 marks)

5.   A 1 m3 rigid tank contains a partition which divides the tank into 2 parts of equal size. One part contains 1 kg of air at 100 kPa and 300 K, whilst the other part is a vacuum. The partition is suddenly removed and the air rapidly expands to fill the entire tank. The process may be regarded as being adiabatic and the air is modelled as an ideal gas.

(a) Calculate the mass of air in the tank.                                                              (2 marks)

(b)  Explain why the work done by the air during the expansion process is equal to zero.  (2 marks)

(c) Explain why the internal energy and temperature of the air does not change during this

(4 marks)

(d) Determine the entropy generation during the expansion process. (Assume variable

specific heats.)

6.   A closed ideal Brayton cycle uses air as its working fluid. The ratio of the pressures at the inlet and outlet of the turbine is 8. The temperature of the air at the inlet of the compressor is 300 K and the temperature of the air at the inlet to the turbine is 1200 K. In your analysis use  the  cold  air-standard  assumptions  with   = 1.005   kJ/kg.K  and   = 1.4.  The compressor and turbine are reversible and adiabatic. A schematic of the system is shown below.

(a)  Sketch the T-s diagram for the cycle and describe each process.                   (4 marks)

(b)  Calculate the power output of the turbine per unit mass flow rate of air.        (4 marks)

(c)  The rate of heat input per unit mass flow rate of air is 660 kJ/kg and the power input to the compressor per unit  mass flow  rate of air is 245  kJ/kg.  Calculate the thermal

of the cycle.

(d)  If the ratio of the pressures at the turbine inlet and outlet is increased to greater than  8, how would you expect the thermal efficiency of the cycle to change?        (2 marks)
