Semester One Final Examination, 2017

STAT2003 Probability & Statistics

1.  Three towns, A, B and C, are connected by communications links: there are two circuits on the link from A to B and two circuits on the link from B to C. Each of the four circuits has probability 0.1 of being blocked, independently of the other circuits.

(a)  What is the probability that communication is possible between towns A and C, that is, at least

one circuit is free on each of the two links?                                                                                     [3]

(b)  Now suppose that there is a direct link connecting A to C that consists of just one circuit, which is

also blocked with probability 0.1, independently of the other circuits. What now is the probability

that communication is possible between A and C?                                                                         [3]

2.  A firm has 3 cement mixers for hire, the hire charge for each of which is $30.00 per day. The overheads are $10.00 per cement mixer per day, whether or not they are hired, and the daily demand for cement mixers has a Poisson distribution with mean 4.

(a)  What is the probability that the rm makes a prot on any given day?                                         [3]

(b)  What is the expected daily prot?                                                                                                     [3]

3.  Random variables X and Y have a joint pdf given by

fX,Y (x, y) =

(a)  Determine the marginal pdf of X .

(b)  Determine the conditional pdf of Y given X = x.                                                                          [2]

(c)  Identify the conditional distribution of Y given X = x.                                                                 [2]

(d)  Evaluate Pr(X + Y > 1).                                                                                                                 [3]

4.  Let X and Y be two correlated random variables, both having variance equal to 1. Let U = aX + bY

and V = cX + dY, where a, b, c, and d, are non-zero constants.  Show that it is possible to choose

these constants in such a way that U and V are uncorrelated.                                                                 [5]

5.  A monkey climbs the four rungs of ladder starting at the bottom, moving up one rung with probabil- ity 0.9, and dropping to the bottom (or staying at the bottom if already there) with probability 0.1. He stops once he reaches the top.  Let Xn  be the rung reached after the n-th attempt to reach the next rung. Clearly {Xn , n = 0, 1, . . . } is a Markov chain taking values in S = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}, with state 0 representing the monkey being at the bottom of the ladder.

(a)  Write down its 1-step transition matrix.

(b)  Given that the monkey started at the bottom, what is the probability that he reaches the top without

ever falling to the bottom?                                                                                                                 [2]

(c)  It can be shown that

P5  =  〕(〕)  0.01900

 0.01000

6.  The California fairy shrimp (Linderiella occidentalis) is known to occupy geographically separated habitat patches. Suppose that there are N patches, n of which are occupied initially and N - n which are not (1 < n < N - 1). A cycle consisting of separate colonization and extinction phases occurs as follows. Each of the N - n unoccupied patches is colonized independently with probability c leaving Y (> n) patches occupied, so that Y = n + C, where C has a binomial B(N - n, c) distribution. Next, the Y patches currently occupied each survive the extinction phase with the same probability s, leaving Z (< Y) patches occupied. Thus, given Y = m, Z has a binomial B(m, s) distribution.

(a)  Use conditional expectation to evaluate 匝(Z). Hence show that the expected change in the number

of occupied patches after both phases have been completed is given by sc(N - n) - (1 - s)n. [3]

(b)  Show that the extinction probability (the probability of all patches being empty after the extinction

phase) is (1 - s)n (1 - cs)N n .                                                                                                         [3]

Hint: Pr(Z = 0) = I{Z=0}.

7.  Let X1 and X2 be two iid exp(λ) random variables. Set Y1  = X1 - X2 and Y2  = X1 + X2 . Determine the joint pdf of Y1  and Y2 , identify the marginal distributions of Y1  and Y2 , and decide whether or not Y1 and Y2 are independent.                                                                                                                       [10]

8.  Let X be a continuous random variable with mgf given by

M (t) = 匝(etX ) =         |t| < 1.

(a)  Determine the expected value of X and the variance of X .                                                            [3]

(b)  Let X1 , X2 , . . .  be a sequence of iid random variables with the same distribution as X .   Let Yn  =   Xi and consider what happens to Yn as n tends to o.

(i)  Is it true that Yn converges in probability to 0? (Explain.)                                                      [2]

(ii)  Explain why^n Yn converges in distribution, and identify its limiting distribution.            [2]
