Semester Two Final Examinations, 2019

STAT3004 Probability Models and Stochastic Processes

1.  [12 Marks]  Let (Sn , n = 0, 1, 2, . . . ) be a branching process with S0  = 1 and with offspring distribution X ~ Geom0 (p) for some p e (0, 1); that is,

贮(X = x) = p(1 - p)x ,        x = 0, 1, 2, . . . .

(a) Determine the probability generating function (pgf) of X, namely g(z) = 匝zX  for z e [0, 1].

(b) Determine the probability of ultimate extinction, η, as a function

of p.

2.  [10 Marks]  Let X = (Xn , n = 0, 1, . . . ) be a Markov chain with state- space E = {0, 1, 2}, initial distribution π (0)  = (0, 1, 0), and one-step

transition matrix

P =  1   3(8)   5(1) 15  4   9

7(6)

2  .

(a) Draw the transition diagram for this Markov chain.

(b)  Calculate the probability that X3  = 1.

(c) Find the unique stationary (and limiting) distribution of the chain.

3.  [8 Marks]   Let  (Nt , t  ≥ 0) be a  (non-homogeneous) Poisson count- ing  process  with  rate  function  λ(t)  =  1 - e t .    For  0  ≤  s  ≤  t,

m e {0, 1, . . . , n}, and for n e {0, 1, 2, . . . }, determine:

贮(Ns  = m | Nt  = n) .

4.  [15 Marks]   Consider one machine maintained by a single machine repair robot.  The machine has an exponentially distributed lifetime with mean 4 weeks (i.e. before it fails). The machine repair robot itself has an exponentially distributed lifetime with mean 104 weeks. If the machine repair robot is functioning when the machine fails, it begins its repairs immediately and completes its repair in an exponentially distributed amount of time with mean 1 week.  If the machine repair robot fails, it ceases work and is itself repaired in an exponentially distributed amount of time with mean 26 weeks.  Initially, both the machine and the machine repair robot are working.

(a) Formulate a continuous-time Markov chain model for the problem, specifying the state space E, the initial distribution π (0) , and the Q-matrix Q.

(b) Draw the corresponding transition rate diagram.

(c) What is the long run probability that both the machine and the machine repair robot are under repair?

(d)  Suppose the machine has failed and is under repair. What is the probability that the machine repair robot fixes the machine before it itself fails?

5.  [10 Marks]  Consider an abstract probability space (Ω , r, 贮).  Answer the following questions.

(a)  Suppose A1 , A2 , and A3  form a )αA/乞/乞/η of Ω.  Write down the

smallest σ-algebra r3   containing A1 ,  A2 ,  and A3 .   How many elements are in r3 ?

(b) Extending (a), suppose now A1 , A2 , . . . , An  form a )αA/乞/乞/η of Ω

for n e {3, 4, 5, . . . }.  What is the cardinality of the smallest σ- algebra, rn , containing A1 , . . . , An ?
