Background information

Firms in the Car Rental & Leasing industry usually rent small and light vehicles and commercial cars to users (private and businesses) in a short periods. Also they offer leasing cars for a long-term periods (usually from 1 to 7 years and there is an option of purchasing the vehicle at the end of the lease). This industry only covers operating leases and not financial

leases moreover leasing a vehicle with a driver is excluded from this industry. Lex Autolease Limited, Alphabet (GB) Ltd, LeasePlan UK Limited, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car UK Limited are major players of this industry. Low Volatility, low Imports, low Product/Service Concentration and High Revenue per Employee are main strengths of this industry however, Low & Steady Level of Assistance, High Competition, Low Profit vs. Sector Average, High Customer Class Concentration, and High Capital Requirements can be mentioned as main weaknesses of this industry.

The industry has performed strongly during the past five years and is expected to be in the growth phase of its life cycle. Industry revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 4.7% over the five years through 2019-20. Moreover, it is forecasted that the revenue to be increased at a compound annual rate of 3.6% to reach £20.3 billion over the five years through 2024-25. It should be noted that because of the environmental concerns, operators will be expected to shift toward low-emission vehicles and alternatively electric vehicles (IBISWORLD 2020).

IBISWORLD (2020) IBISWorld Industry Report N77.110 Car Rental & Leasing in the UK [online] available from < https://my.ibisworld.com/uk/en/industry/n77.110/about > [19 June 2020].

Assessment requirement

As a Business Analyst, it is expected that you examine the Car Rental & Leasing in the UK and make recommendations about the future of the sector. This assignment requires you to produce a 10 minutes video presentation and a 1000-words report on business analytics within UK’s Car Rental & Leasing business sector. Not only will this assessment test your presentation skills, but it will also assess how well you are able to gather data, analyse and interpret the output with supporting relevant literature.

Data gathering

Obtain yearly data on a minimum of 10 Car Rental & Leasing in the UK from FAME/Statista/IBISworld/Yahoo Finance. You should collect data on not less than five and not more than ten variables over the period from 2011 to 2019.

The video presentation and your report should address and present the following:

1.  Analyze relevant journal articles on business analytics and decision making.

2.  Use the dataset you have gathered on the UK’s Car Rental & Leasing to plot appropriate tables, graphs and develop appropriate dashboards to visualize the data.

3.  Compute and explain the summary statistics that describe the properties of your variables and discuss why these summary statistics are useful in the analysis of your data.

4.  Identify the relationship among the variables by computing the correlation and regression analysis for the variables, using appropriate software (eg spreadsheet, SPSS etc) to uncover patterns and show changes over time. (You will have to determine which of the variables should be your dependent and independent variables).

5.  Interpret the data output in the light of business analytics and intelligence in the Car Rental & Leasing in the UK.

NB: The video presentation and the 1000-word report are weighted at 50% each.

GUIDELINES AND BACKGROUND TO THIS ASSIGNMENT

Plagiarism

As part of your study you will be involved in carrying out research and using this when writing up your coursework. It is important that you correctly acknowledge someone else’s writing, thoughts or ideas and that you do not attempt to pass this off as your own work. Doing so is known as plagiarism. It is not acceptable to copy from another source without acknowledging that it is someone else’s writing or thinking. This includes using paraphrasing as well as direct quotations. You are expected to correctly cite and reference the works of others. The Centre for Academic Writing provides documents to help you get this right. If you are unsure, please visit www.coventry.ac.uk/caw. You can also check your understanding of academic conduct by completing the Good Academic Practice quiz.

Self-plagiarism or reuse of work previously submitted

You must not submit work for assessment that you have already submitted (partially or in full), either for your current course or for another qualification of this and any other university, unless this is specifically provided for in your assignment brief or specific course or module information. Where earlier work by you is citable, ie. it has already been published/submitted, you must reference it clearly. Identical pieces of work submitted concurrently will also be considered to be self-plagiarism. Self-plagiarism is unacceptable because you cannot gain credit for the same work twice.

The University VLE includes a plagiarism detection system and assessors are experienced enough to recognise plagiarism when it occurs. Copying another student’s work, using previous work of your own or copying large sections from a book or the internet are examples of plagiarism and carry serious consequences. If you are a business student and joined Coventry University in September 2020 or later please use APA 7th edition referencing, if you joined prior to this date you may use APA 7 th edition Reference Style (Coventry version) that you are familiar with. Law students should use OSCOLA. Please be consistent in the referencing style that you use and use it correctly to avoid a case of plagiarism or cheating being brought. If you are unsure, please contact the Centre for Academic Writing, your Progress Coach or a member of the course team.

Return of Marked Work

You can expect to have marked work returned to you (10 working days). If for any reason there is a delay you will be kept informed. Marks and feedback will be provided online/in class/face to face. As always, marks will have been internally moderated only, and will therefore be provisional; your mark will be formally agreed later in the year once the external examiner has completed his / her review.
