EXAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR FINAL EXAMINATION  INFO5992

In 2000,  Reed  Hastins, the co-founder of Netflix, flew to  Dallas to propose a  partnership with Blockbuster’s CEO. Reed proposed a partnership where Netflix would establish and run a new business model for Blockbuster (i.e. online delivery), while Blockbuster would promote Netflix in its physical stores. Netflix’s CEO was laughed out of the room. In the 2000s, Blockbuster had more than 10,000 stores, 60,000 employees and was worth $8 billion; whilst Netflix was only a 2-year old startup. Yet,  10 years later in 2010, Blockbuster declared bankruptcy while Netflix continued to dominate the industry till today with more than 182.8 million subscribers worldwide and is worth $200 billion.

Q1.1 Blockbuster’s main business model comprised of renting movies in the form of videotapes and DVDs via their brick-and-mortar stores. Blockbuster offers their customers the ability to rent the latest released movies and shows. On the other hand, when Netflix launched in 1997, it offered an online service that mails DVDs to customers via post; it did not offer the latest released movies, however, it was significantly cheaper than renting from a brick-and-mortar store such as the Blockbuster. In 2000, Netflix launched an online streaming service.

Q1.6 Netflix’s Open Source Software Center uses and provides open source software which enable Netflix to deliver online content and serve real-time load to 183 million subscribers worldwide.
